Movie Critics

I dont like them. They complain that movies are horrible and, unreal, but they seem to miss the point that movies are to ENTERTAIN. And Id like to get my hands on the critic that criticized paul in 2F2F

I love most of the movie critics. It gives me a better idea of what I want to check out. If they DON"T like it, I usually do! 😉

Gotta go along with you there, tieler. I do enjoy Roger's insights into film. I used to enjoy watching he and Gene Siskal go at it in ther weekly show.

I actually like movie critics, provided they give sufficient insight on why they feel as they do about a certain film. That way you can ascertain whether you personally would like the film. The only one I currently read is James Berardinelli:

I rarely disagree with him, and he's saved me babysitter and popcorn money on many, many occasions. He cares whether you'll enjoy the film, not just whether it's "good", if you know what I mean. And he's non-profit, except for the book he just put out of the billion reviews he's done since he started years ago. He's not hi-falutin', just a guy that loves movies.

For me, movie critics fall into two categories.

Those in the first category view their job as telling whether a film is well made or badly made, why they think so, and what you may find of value in seeing it. These critics I like.

Those in the second category write reviews that attempt to show that the critic deserves to be on the faculty of a college film department, doing pomo criticism of films for academic journals. These critics are worthless.

I like reading a critics review! Based on their attitude and their reason for liking or disliking a film I can usually get a picture of how truly subjective the critic is or whether or not he's a total asshole. Normally I'll always see a film if I want to see no matter what a critic has to say about it.

It's a double-edged sword, that...

On the one hand, I despise them, I mean, who the hell are they? It's not as though their opinions on a film are more valid than anyone else's, or like they're performing a public service by offering their insights into a movie.

But on the other hand, how freakin' cool would it be to get paid to go see movies and tell people what ya thought of them?
