Are you looking for opinions, or a definitive answer? The latter is not possible by any objective standard, so I'm a bit confused here. I happen to like both composers myself.

Like comparing mccartney (mozart) to lennon (beethoven) but since its an honest attempt to fuel a discussion i.ll say beethoven. Would have said mozart a few years back based on mozarts reputation as a piano virtuoso but moonlight sonata puts it over the top. Mozart's life inspired a better movie though

Who was the better composer (in your opinion)

Ah, OK. Thanks for clearing that up for me. In my opinion, I can't say one was better than the other. Might be an interesting discussion, though. 🙂

Personally, I like Beethoven better. His works are generally more motif-driven, and thus are more memorable, in my opinion.

Pieces like Fur Elise, the Moonlight Sonata, the Pathetique Sonata, and the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th symphonies are universally famous and utterly unforgettable.

Just my 2 cents lol

Hard to say really. Both composers' works run the gamut from hardcore thrash to gentle introspective. I'd say I enjoy them equally, like two different favorite flavors. And that we have had the privilege of their good works on this planet is a win win for everyone.

All that said; I wouldn't want Mozart to handle my finances; and I wouldn't want Beethoven as my IRS auditor.

Personally I'm a Beethoven fan so I'd have to say him. I studied classical music years ago and I developed a great appreciation for his work.

While it's almost a blasphemy to compare both masters, I'm more drawn to Beethoven as well.

I enjoy both equally, but I guess I'll pick Beethoven as the "better" since he managed to compose music even after he was deaf. That always boggled my mind, to be honest.

I always think the best way to explain my opinion on these two is to compare to genres of recent days. Let's take the 70's for comparison for instance ... Mozart would have been the "pop composer" of the day, like Abba, The Partridge Family, The Osmonds, perhaps, while Beethoven would have been the prog rock of the day. Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer, (early) Genesis, maybe. Just a thought more than an opinion. I just find Beethoven to be deeper than Mozart. Better? I don't know. I think it depends on my listening mood, but I like them both.

If your question is about taste, I like Beethoven's work better. 😀

Mozart is much easier to analyze. Beethoven's work, especially his later work, was much more experimental (though Mozart had some weird pieces as well).

But as a listener, I'd say that I usually prefer Beethoven for that exact reason. Of course, it depends on my mood. When I'm looking for perfectly tonal implementations of chromaticism, Mozart is the way to go. When I'm looking for brilliant (and sometimes over-the-top) orchestration, emotive variation in dynamic intensity, and relative unpredictability, I listen to Beethoven.

They were both brilliant. But my favorite composer (at least right now) is still Prokofiev.

Hmmm... let me add my extra thought to that:

Prog/math rock: >>> Bartok

G3: >>> Liszt, Paganini, Schubert

😀

Since I am a vocal performance major and a soprano my opinion is already bias. I of course say Mozart all the way. Not that I am dissing Beethoven, but he only wrote one opera. Mozart wrote a ton and he was very soprano friendly(Lol probably because he was banging them).

LOL! The closest thing I've seen about this is when I watched the movie "Amadeus." He did bang some... 😀
