I'm watching TV in the middle of the night and I just heard, at 3:38 AM, that Mr. Roger's died.

Anyone else ever watch his show when you were sick, or pretending to be sick, to stay home from school?

A sad passing indeed. I never watched the show much as a very young child, and as an adult I sometimes found the show to be a bit out of touch with kids. But Fred Rogers did what so few take the time to do these days. Dedicate his life to the early important development of children.

With the direction TV is going these days, I wonder what will be left for future generations. Many parents are so acclimated to the standard fare of children's programming, that they assume their kids are, too. It's really nothing to sit your kid down in front of Pokemon or Sailor Moon and not give it a second thought. Without getting into the debate over TV being harmful for kids...leave that out of the equation altogether...are they really learning anything?

Without trying to boast, I was blessed with the ability to read fairly complex things at the age of two. All of my life, I assumed it had to do with some sort of "gifted" syndrome or something like that, if I gave it a thought at all. Then, a few months ago, I was having a conversation with my mother about those times and she simply said "Oh, that was because of Sesame Street. You used to sit in front of the TV and sound out all the phrases along with the Muppets." You learn something new every day, eh? My point is that much of this programming is going the way of the dinosaur, unforunatly. Even Sesame Street is having a harder time staying afloat these days.

Public Television is worth keeping around. It's mostly what I watch these days, to escape the rest of the crap. Try to donate a little, if you can.

To a person, Rogers' friends and family called him "simply a nice, nice person." Say what you will about his personality (and we all do, even me in times past), but the world is sorely lacking in people who just know how to be nice. It sounds like a little thing, but it's not, really.

Farewell, Fred.

It's a little cloudy in the neighborhood today...

I heard it this morning on the radio. Such a bummer. My favorite show was waaaaaayyyyy back in the 70's when her went on the set of "The Incredible Hulk".

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Fred Rogers, better known as television's "Mister Rogers," a cultural icon and kindly neighbor to generations of American children, died Thursday at the age of 74.

Rogers died at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after a brief battle with stomach cancer, according to a spokeswoman for his production company.

David Newell, a Rogers family spokesman, told The Associated Press that Rogers was exactly as he appeared on TV.

"He was so genuinely, genuinely kind, a wonderful person," said Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on the show. "His mission was to work with families and children for television. ... That was his passion, his mission, and he did it from Day One."

He is being remembered on the Charlie Rose show tonight........

When I was growing up in Thailand, "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" was one of the few TV shows we were provided regularly, complete with subtitles! I loved his show, and I too was saddened at hearing of his passing. Fred Rogers truly cared about children and about responsible televison, and he will be missed. :sadcry: :sadcry:

Love always,

It's a sad day in the neighborhood. If there were more shows like Mr. Rogers, maybe kids would actually learn something from TV! RIP, Fred Rogers. 🙁

I found out yesterday morning, and I just saw his story on CNN. I have to admit - I got choked up. I'm fighting back tears as I type this. It's so remarkable that I am so deeply touched by this man, whose show I stopped watching so many years ago. I just wanted to take a moment to share this.

If there ever was anything in this world purely good and comforting, it was his neighborhood. He was a part of so many people's childhood - he will forever be remembered in mine. It's just a shame that it took today for me to finally realize this.

I will miss you, Mr. Rogers.

That does indeed suck. He was a perfect role-model to many children and his presence will be missed.
