Hey friends...

I'll begin on Saturday. Saturday morning, I woke up and my mouth was sore, and a little swollen...I did rinse with salt water, and even peroxide, and did what I can to help myself out. Sunday mornig, I thought I had it in complete control...but this morning, 'monday' I looked like Rocky, my right side of my face was so completly swollen, my eye was nearly shut. I toughed it out, and went to work. My foreman took one look at me, told me to go home, and ring my dentist. I called the doctor from work, scheduled an appointment, and went.

It was my very last molar on the top right side, and he suggested pulling it. Have any of you ever had a tooth pulled? OH MY GOD! Even with novacane, there is no pain like that in the world. He was doing his job, and here I am a 30 yr old man, acting like a child, I mean..as soon as I saw the needle, I was cringing and grasping the nurse's hand so tightly, my knuckles were white.

The job was done, and I sat in the chair bleeding, and very nautious, in fact I almost vomited in the chair. I was only under local anesthtitic, but was like in a fog, I got vics for the pain, and of course antibiotics.

See, this sucks, I like my teeth, and well..still swollen and in little pain, but thought I'd cry on a shoulder or two...sorry for the long post.

It's too bad you had a painful experience at the dentist. After the novicane has worn off it is not uncommon for a person to have pain and swelling after a molar or wisdom tooth has been removed. When my wisdom teeth were extracted I had pain and swelling afterword but felt no pain at all when they were pulled due to the fact that I had two shots of novicane when each tooth was pulled and I had them done one at a time too. I have to admit those shots can smart a bit but the discomfort only lasts for a short time. Just take the medication the dentist gave you, lay down and take it real easy and you will feel better soon. You would have been in even more pain and been quite sick if your tooth had not been pulled.

Now its things like this that almost make me afraid of going to the dentist. While I've never had to have a tooth pulled, and I can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like, my sympathies to you and a wish for a speedy recovery.

Jeez, when my mother said women can take pain way better than men she wasn't kidding. You big babies. 😛

Actually, it wouldn't be the pain that would bother me. Because at least I know its there. I think I, as well as possibly everyone, worry if we have some sort of gum disease and don't even know it.

I think the biggest shocker to alot of people is not the pain itself, but going to the dentist thinking you are orally in good health only to find out that you have to have teeth pulled, or theres something wrong with your gums, or something even more extreme like an actual operation of your gums and such, or you have to take medicine because the dentist thinks if you don't your teeth will fall our and/or rot.

Sometimes this is irrational worrying, but then again, some people don't take very good care of their teeth and so shouldn't be surprized. And extremes cases of poor oral hygiene are not uncommon by any means.

Hmph...you wanna know pain She Devil, try this one:

about 5 years back I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted (which is a nice word for sawn in half and crudely yanked out of the jaw). Oh, did I mention that all 4 were ripped out durring 1 forty minute time period. Oh, and here's the best part, that happened with me under LOCAL anesthesia (don't ask). Yep, no nighty-night for me...I was wide awake for every slice, i felt every dice, I felt every rip, I felt every scrape and tear. Oh, and I forgot, the dentist did a rather whimsical thing in that everytime he successfully removed a piece of one of the offending molars, he would proceed to brandish it in front of me not entirely unlike a primevil hunter displaying his bloody prize for all those around him to see. Fun fun fun. Ah...the sights, the sounds...the smells...yep a denitists office is where the magic happens.
Of course...the pain...was tremendous...and you want to talk swollen?
Oh sure, they gave me pain medication to try to cease the endless stabbing that throbbing. Ah yes...wonderful, happy little pills which my stomach (in a fairly volatile surge of rebelion) quite vocally rejected as being unfit for human consumption. Yes sir...lived on asprin and liquid meals for over a week. Ah...good times...

We've had outstandingly good fortune with a dental extraction specialist. My hubby had to have two wisdom teeth removed, and even with local anasthesia it was totally painless.

Modern dental care should not be excruciating -- if I had unexpected pain with a procedure and couldn't get a satisfactory explanation, I would look for another dentist.

Best of luck,

Ohhh Curr I know ALL about dental pain! Cry on my shoulder all you need to! I had two gruesome root canals on teeth that were pulled a few years later. I've spent an ungodly amount of time in the dentist chair. The only thing I can say for it is I've learned to swallow with my mouth open like a pro. Like a pro? A pro WHAT? I dont even want to know...

I've been in a position similar to nessonite's lately......3 canals, one on the way. It seems to have alot to do with the dentist, as I've had no problems following any of the root canals. Seems to be the "normal" dentistry work that is starting the troubles.
