Tonight has been a wild night. Let me explain:
This past July, our family vacation included a trip to Disneyland in California. MY wife refused to do Orlando because she has wanted to see the original park and Cinderella's castle since she was a kid. We had a great time.
On night number 2, while my wife got and saved great seats for us for the fireworks show, the kids and I went across to the Disney California theme park to a certain shop for souvenirs. My daughter found the "Goofy" hat I've always wanted (the one with the long floppy ears and the buck teeth on the bill). We got the items we wanted and left the shop. Suddenly, my daughter hears the 'call of the bladder' so we hit the restrooms near the gate to enter Disney California.
While my son and I waited, a lady who looked like she was in her early 50's was standing there and asked if she could get a picture of me son and I because she was getting a big kick out of seeing my in the hat. I agreed and she waited for my daughter to come out as well when she asked the ages of our kids. I told her my daughter was starting 5th grade that fall and my son would start 6th grade. She then tells us that she is one of the casting directors for "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" for FOX. After she takes the pic of the two kids and me, she gives us her card and other contact info and asked the kids if they would like to submit questions for the show. They said yes and she told us to e-mail her when we got home. We did and we sent in questions written by them both.
They e-mailed us back saying they liked one of the questions and wanted to use it as a possible question for the upcoming season. So, I filled out all the release forms, sent them recent school pictures, and contact information for the school as they requested.
Tonight we watched the show for the first time as a family (first time for me). Lo and behold, when the contestant selected a math question, they said this was a question submitted by a member of their "Classroom Club" and there was my son's face on TV with the his first name and the name of the school! We were dazed, floored and in shock! They actually used his question! It was a semi-long multiplication question and the guy got it right without help from the kids on the show. And, since they used my son's question, their school will get a new computer lab compliments of the show!
We got a call from his math teacher right away, then called the principal, who had just heard from another teacher. So far we have had one neighbor, two teachers and his basketball coach call tonight. This is basketball homecoming week at the school, so this is gonna be a great climax for Spirit Week!
To say that the house here is rocking is an understatement. The only problem is we did not have the VCR running to record the show. By ANY CHANCE did anyone record tonight's (1/31/2008) show? If so, needless to say we need a copy!!!!
Thanks for putting up with me during this proud papa moment. This was too good not to share with y'all...
