The news last night spoke of a nationwide coordinated effort by hackers to shut down as many web sites as possible and disrupt service. Though the authorities are aware of this, there's little they can do to stop it. They recommend that all site owners be sure that their security is in place and that they have up-to-date backups on disk to minimize the effect if the site is hit. They're also recommending that those on cable or DSL (permanent ON connections) unplug when not online to prevent their system being hit. They're taking this very seriously. So, I guess we should do the same.

Just wanted to give folks a heads up.

Thanks for the heads-up...

I also hear it's a good idea to unplug your domputer from the phone lines when you're not actually accessing the Internet, too. Just a thought.

Yep. We do that all the time anyway since getting nailed by our friendly neighborhood hacker. I love watching them get blocked by our new security program! Besides, it takes all of 10 sec. to reconnect. Why NOT disconnect rather than leaving things open to the clowns?

Yea

Thanks for the heads up, I'll unplug when im not on. It's a shame we have to do things like this...:sowrong:

I'm on a cable modem and I unplug as a matter of course, when I'm not online. I've insulted that many computer-literate people I figure it's better safe than sorry.😀

I work in PC Support for a large company. I can tell all of you that if you are not online, then there is no way for a hacker to "hack" your system...just made sure your offline and your safe...there's no such thing as hacking through the internet without being online...it's a myth!

Spyware

Here is a basic editorial of a person who's privacy was invaded. He states, "So you can imagine my surprise, when I ran a simple spyware sweeper and discovered that 38 separate little programs had burrowed inside my computer and were watching my every move. Yup, like so many of you, my privacy had been violated and I didn't even know it." I suggest reading this article. Don't be the next one whose life is displayed freely for strangers.
