So very brilliantly I tried doing my taxes online for the first time. Seemed easy enough. Went through it like a breeze until I realized after I had submitted it that I was getting back $1,899 from the state. The federal seemed right as I was getting a small refund like I usually do but the state I usually the last few years broke even. So I went back and looked it over and found the error. On form IT-201 line 75 it says "Total estimated tax payments/amount paid with form IT-370) and I put in the total amount of NY state taxes withheld (which is also listed a few lines up). So basically I doubled it as it totaled both and is why I am getting a big refund. Uh...what do I do? Lol...I see it told me Form 1040X is used to make any corrections but I do not see anywhere on this form where it shows I can correct that specific line that I made an error on. I would imagine the IRS may catch it and adjust it for me if they see I accidently entered the same amount on 2 lines...but if not I don't want to get in trouble 3 years from now when they suddenly come across it for some reason. Anyone know any way I can fix this?

While I dont work with taxes in the US, I do to an extent in the UK.
The key thing is, don't rely on them correcting the error for you, Its unlikely they'll just assume you entered it twice. If there is online help or a call centre I would advise using them to inquire about resolving this, because as you say, you don't want trouble down the line.

If it's a state tax issue, I would notify your state's treasury, and they can patch you into the proper department for reconciling the error. Have a copy of your tax return(with a notation on the form where the error is), and the form that was sent to you(form IT-201 and IT-370).

That's just what I would do though.

I don't think the IRS will adjust it, since they are federal and not state.

Ha...thanks everyone. I think that link though is pretty much what I need. Thanks again.
