Hi! I'd be happy to help you with training your puppy. Send me a PM sometime and tell me what's giving you trouble.

(If you're curious about credentials, I am a veterinary student who has taken several behavior courses and is an active member in the behavior club).

Spread the newspapers.

Here's hoping that your puppy will use one spot.:evilha:

been doing that...in her crate...heheehheeh

How big is the crate that you have for her? It might be too big for her. If a crate is the right size a dog should not want to soil in it - they don't want to lie in or very near their own waste. A crate should be big enough for the dog to stand and turn around in and not a whole lot bigger. If the crate you have is too big you can always put a partition in it instead of buying a new one.

How long does she need to stay in her crate without a potty break?

Is it getting warm up there?

It might be time to introduce your puppy to the great outdoors.😀

we put her in the crate which is big enough for her bed in back of crate which is little since she will only get to be about 7-8 pds. she is 3 pds now. we use newpapper or tranning pads in frpnt of crate where her food and water dish is. She does go potty outside at least once an hour and gets a special treat outside when she goes potty.. so she is reconginizing potty equals treat..

No no. No shock collar on that little baby. You won't need it.

When you say the crate is big enough for her bed in back of it... how much space is left over other than the bed?

The problem I'm seeing here is... well, it's two fold. Sort of. I think the use of newspaper and training pads are alright, but you need to keep in mind that if she is going to learn to go potty in the house now (on the pads/paper), it's something you may have a hard time weaning her from in the future. If you want her to be puppy pad trained, more power to you, but be sure you're considering the long road for that. Also, consider the placement of the newspaper/puppy pads. You said you put it where her food and water are. Would you like to eat in your bathroom?? 😉 Though dogs can be kind of gross sometimes, they do have their limits. She doesn't want to potty near her food. I would think about changing placement of the puppy pads.

Good job on the treat = potty positive reinforcement. That is great. Are you giving her the treat right away or waiting until you get back inside? Puppies (dogs in general) don't have fabulous short term memories, and if you give her a treat after you've come back inside, she may not realize that's what you're giving it to her for.

One thing you may consider if you're still having troubles is clicker training. I won't ramble on and on about that now, but if you want more info on that let me know.

we no longer put her food in her crate for she only spills it all over the place.. groose... I wont make her eat that.. just a little water dish while we are at work and over night so she dont get dehydrated.. we take her outside to go potty and give her a treat outside if she goes potty right then and there. We are also keeping her in the familly room with the door closed so we can keep an eye on her and to give the cats time to get to know her she they dont kill her.. bring ing them together a little each day. She goes up to them.. they dont always run away but do let her know they are the boss and she backs off yet comes back for more hisses... its so cute... Don and I take turns spending time with the cats while the other one fo us is with the puppy.. so the cats dont get an attitude.

I guess I'm just a little confused. What exactly is her problem? Just the pottying in her crate?

NO porblem of her crate... just teaching her to go outside.. she still has accidents in house even after we have taken her outside for long periods of time.. she comes in and imediately goes on the carpet... grrrrrr

Ok .. me again.. saydee is now almost 9 month old and still refusses to bark to let us know she has to go out side to do her business.and even after we had her outside for hrs.. she still gives us stink pickles a few times a week on the carpet.. grrrrrrrr.. I have finally broke down to putting her nose near it and spanking her and putting her in her crate after she does that.. I feel like a bad mommy doing that..bought a dog whistle and a clicker the other day but dont knwo how to use them.. can anyone help me with this..

I'm afraid that you are going to have to be a "Bad Mommy".

You must get her used to the great outdoors, while the weather is comfortable. Otherwise it might be a long cold and stinky winter for you. :idontwann

she is used to the outdoors.. she loves to be outside.. we let her play out there for hrs... she is so stubborn...

Maybe she needs to be around another dog?

Another dog might teach her to "Mark Her Territory".

already have 5 pets. dont need anymore.. what will another dog do to help her bark to go potty. Cant afford another dog. vet bills!

Hey hun. Got your PM yesterday, sorry I hadn't replied yet.

First, a question for you. When you're spanking her and putting her nose near it, is it IMMEDIATELY after she does it, or is it over 30 seconds after the fact? If it isn't right away, she won't know what you're doing it for.

I've never used a whistle, myself, but the clicker can be great. The clicker is used for what is called a "bridge." The bridge is what brings together the appropriate action (ie going potty outside) and the reward (like a treat). It basically replaces you saying "good girl." If you want to go this route, you'd need to get her used to the fact that clicker = treat. So for a while, just have her in front of you and click the clicker. Every time you click, give her a treat. Soon you can take it outside with you. When you see her go potty, as soon as she's done click the clicker and give her a treat. If you do this long enough I think it will help you, especially if she sees you with the clicker.

Alternatively, you may want to consider leashing her while she's inside, keeping her with you all the time. This way if you see her start posturing to go potty you can take her outside immediately. And if you can't watch her, put her in her crate with a kong full of treats or something similar.

Any questions, feel free to PM me again. I hope some of this helps. Keep me posted!

Ok. it is me again.. I have not been working for 3 months now and every time we put saydee in her crate when we go away she goes poop in it and it gets smeared all over the place.. I always take her outside before I put her in it... yet she still does it. We have put newspaper and old towels in the crate.. nothing works.. I thought dogs wont go where they sleep..

HELP.. how do I break her of this.. I have rubber her nose in it, spanked her, given her baths, nothing works..

Need some suggestions for those who have dogs.
