NEST Dates

The date for NEST is the first weekend (full or partial) of May every year.

It's been set that way for several years, and will continue to be that date.

NEST has happened in April, May, June, I believe one in July and also in Oct.
Before I set the date for the first weekend in May, far too much time was
spent trying to figure out who could come and who could not. Knowing the
dates in advance makes every last thing run far more smoothly.

Although this date does interfere with at least one other event I know of,
for most people, having a consistent date is a really good thing. It does often
mean that students are still taking finals, and unable to make it one year,
and of course, some people have work duties which prevent them from
coming, but it really is the perfect time of year to have an event in Philly,
due to weather, (all snow gone, not too hot) and it's before Memorial Day,
when the price of travel goes up, it avoids (generally) all other major holidays.

I will not be changing the date for one or even more persons, so unless 140
people PM me one year and ALL asked me for the exact same different date,
NEST is the first weekend in May for the forseeable future.

What exactly does this mean?
NEST2012 - May 4, 5, 6, 7
NEST2013 - May 3, 4, 5, 6
NEST2014 - May 2, 3, 4, 5
NEST2015 - May 1, 2, 3, 4
NEST2016 - April 29, 30, May 1, 2
NEST2017 - May 5, 6, 7, 8
NEST2018 - May 4, 5, 6, 7
NEST2019 - May 3, 4, 5, 6
NEST2020 - May 1, 2, 3, 4

This is Lee doing what she does best: laying down the Law. 😉

I couldn't make it to NEST when I was in college. (When you're studying engineering and have five finals, a weekend off is inconceivable.) It was a bit frustrating but my first experience was so tremendous I wouldn't have had it any other way. Also, part of me is glad I approached it with a little post-college maturity.

NB: In the Western tradition Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox and so can't fall at the end of April or in May. Eastern Orthodox Easter can be later and falls out on April 28 in 2019, but that's a week before NEST. Edit: Orthodox Easter does fall out during NEST in 2013 and 2016. I don't think that will deter too many people. At least Passover can't coincide.

Thanks for the clarification, Paul, re: Easter.
Now I never have to choose! 😉

Exactly. Having a consistent date known in advance lets many people plan and avoid conflicts. 😀

All I could think of when I saw the title of this thread was...

"May we DANCE, with your DATES?"

😀

I'd say it's better to have a date not in conflict with Easter Sunday - so if that means move it one weekend forward or backward to avoid it, so be it. I'd pick that over a consistant day each year 🙂.

In an effort to avoid any "conflicts" with our Canadian brethren and to further promote goodwill between our two countries, please see below the "Canada Day" dates from now until 2020.

Thanks for clearing that up, asshat. :doublefinger:

See you this weekend!

There is no conflict possible with the first Sunday in May and Easter Sunday.

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. The last possible date that Easter Sunday can ever be is April 25. It was April 25 in 1943 and will be again in 2038. It can never be later than that.

Didn't I say this already?...

The Eastern Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, and uses the Julian March 21, the Gregorian April 3, as its equinox date (even though the equinox is definitely NOT April 3). That's why Orthodox Easter CAN fall on NEST.

Shama lama ding dong!
