New clip server

Hi all, after finally getting to grips with the new firewall, I just brought my FTP server on-line, and what better use for it than a clips server? 😀

The server is currently available on ftp at 81.86.197.23, username Tickle, password tickle (note it's case sensitive). This address is going to change quite often I'm afraid as my service provider hasn't given me a static IP address. I'll update this page with new details as and when they're needed.

There's just over 100 clips on at the moment, split into five categories (group, mixed, lower body, upper body and male) and I've got another 200+ to add at some point soon. There's also an uploads directory that you can copy your own clips to (or thank you notes, credit card numbers, anything like that 😉 ) so if you've got something that's not on the server feel free to add it.

Now for the bad news. This is running on a broadband connection, so I can't guarantee the connection speed. For now there is no limit on the number of users but I'll put one on if it gets too busy. What I would ask is that people use some common sense and don't try to grab everything at once. I'm planning on keeping this box around for a while, so if you could not download the whole directory structure in one sitting it'd be appreciated.

As for availability, I'll try to keep it up 24/7 but that's probably being optimistic. If the server is down please give it an hour or two and try again. If there's any serious problem I'll try and post an update on this board.

If anyone does have problems (and a mate tested this for me not an hour ago so I'm hoping it'll be okay) either post here or e-mail me (address is in my profile).

In return for providing this server I ask for only two simple things. First, that everyone shows some courtesy for other users and tries not to grab all my bandwidth for themselves 😛. Second, if you have a minute or five, some feedback on the story postings I've got on this board would be great! 😀

And that seems to be working, less than five minutes for first login, I'm impressed.

One thing I forgot to mention, connection timeout is set to 60 seconds. That should be enough to let people browse and download but still stop any dead connections hanging around. If it's not long enough I'll change it.

I'd also suggest using a dedicated FTP program, rather than IE's built in FTP browser. I'm currently using WS_FTP LE, it's free, needs very little setup and seems to work well. Available here, but make sure to select the LE version, not the free 'trial' of the Pro package.

Sorry, guess I was still in 'work mode' when I wrote that. One step by step guide to getting at this server through IE coming up:

Open IE
In the address bar type ftp://81.86.197.23
A message box should pop up asking for a Username and Password
In the Username box type Tickle
In the password box type tickle (the server's case sensitive, so you'll need to type both Username and Password in exactly as they are here)
You should now have access to the server.
The folder structure should come up in the IE window. This works like any other file manager, double click on a folder to open it, use the back button in your browser to move up again.
To save a file, either right click it and select "Copy to folder", then find the location you want to save it in, or you can drag and drop between the FTP window and a My Computer window.
Once you're finished, close the IE window.

Faq -

Q: I get a "server not found" message (or similar)?
A: Check the Tickling Media Forum for any problems with the server, or for any change in the ftp:// address. If there aren't any it's likley to just be a temporary glitch, give it an hour and try again.

Q: I can find the server but can't log in?
A: Check your Username and Password settings are as shown above. The server is case sensitive so a username of tickle, as opposed to Tickle, will not work.

Q: I'm getting the username and password right but still can't log in?
A: Check you've remembered to put ftp:// in front of the address. If you're getting the word "Viking" anywhere in the log in request you've probably missed this out.

Q: Why am I getting slow download speeds ?
A: Because this is a free server running on a home connection and it's likley that someone else is also downloading. As soon as bandwidth is available your download should speed up, so be patient and it'll get there in the end.

Q: Why does my connection keep failing?
A: To try and minimise load on the server any connection that's not used for 60 seconds will be disconnected.

Q: What's available on the server?
A: Currently there's a little over 100 video clips, due to expand to somewhere around 300 in the next few days. If there's any demand for it pictures, stories and sound clips may be provided in the future. [B}Update 15/02/03[/B] - Now that the server seems to be behaving itself I've put the bulk of the clips on, as well as some other stuff. There's now ~300 clips, 150 stories, 50 sound clips and 1,300 pics avilable and I'll add new material as I get it.

Q: I've got clips that aren't on the server. Can I get them posted?
A: Yep, there's a folder called "Upload" just for this purpose. Simply drag and drop your files into this folder and they'll be copied up to the server.

Q: I've got another question, how do I get an answer?
A: Your best bet is to post it to the tickling media forum in this thread. As a rule I'm on-line at least once a day and will try to answer all posts as quickly as I can. Otherwise e-mail me at the address in my profile and I'll get back to you.

You'd never guess I run these *&)*!!!! things for a living would ya? 😀 If anyone's got problems after reading this e-mail me with the problem and what's happening (or not happening) and I'll try and help out.

An apology to anyone trying to login since about 05:30 GMT, server bombed out, just too much traffic I think, so anyone trying to get in would have had problems. It should now be back up and running.

Oh, and a thank you to anyone whose been uploading new clips, stories, pics etc. It's appreciated.

Out of curiosity, any demand for making images and stories available on this server as well, or would you rather it stayed a dedicated clip server?


Update Seems that the FTP program I was using really didn't like the number of connections that you were throwing at it and decided to die every couple of hours. I've swapped over to a different FTP server which I hope will be a bit better, if there's any problems either post or e-mail and I'll see what I can do. It should also handle IE connections a bit better than the other one.

If there aren't any major problems with the server in the next few hours I'll try and get a file update done before the end of the day.

My lord this thing's popular, hope everyone that's logged on in the last couple of days has found something they liked and my apologies for the rather, umm, shaky nature of the server.

Just a quick update - the new FTP software seems to be a lot more stable and should hopefully stand up to the load this time round. I've just finished updating the files available on the server as well, so there's now, 300 Movie Clips, 50 Sound Clips, 160 Stories and 1,300 Pictures available. There's also an upload directory available which should let you copy files up to the server if you've got any files of any sort that aren't up on here yet.

Having a quick look at the server log files, IE's been causing some problems when logging on, I think that the upgrade should have sorted that out as well. If there are any problems, just yell and I'll have a look at it.

If I do have to do any maintenance on the server, I'll try and get it done between 19:00 and 22:00 GMT, so if you have any problems connecting in that time frame, just try again a little later on.

Right, fixed problem, the server should be back around 10:00 GMT (umm, about 2 hours time).

Short version - you guys killed my server 😀 Doing a quick rebuild with something a little more stable.

Okay, the server should be back up and running on the same address as before. My apologies for the downtime, think I know what went wrong though and should have fixed that particular glitch.

By the way, what's your impressions of this server, is it worth me running it or not?

First off, thanks for your effort in putting this server up - I appreciate you braving the hordes of |_337 script kidies and bumbling ISPs to give to the community.

Second, are you quite sure you won't get a bill the size of my arm for the bandwidth ?

Third... if you think you'd like a little database driven clip indexing and lookup Apache/PHP/mySQL thingamabob ( Tickler.Gender/Ticklee.Gender, Ticklee.BodyPart(s), Clip.Format, Clip.Length, foo, bar and baz), holler - one good turn deserves another.

Sorry to anyone who was trying to get on for the last few hours, you lot are throwing so many requests you keep crashing my router

Thanks, although if any script kiddiot tries to <clickty click> their way onto this machine I'm reaching for the big red button attached to the ICBL (InterContinental Balistic LART). Just wish I could provide more bandwidth for you lot, this thing's currently serviing about 2,500 files a day and I know that I'm falling well short of what people would like to get.

Technicaly this is an unmetered broadband product, so my ISP shouldn't say a word. When/if they do start complaining (and it's no worse than running Kazza 24/7 after all) then I may have to down it, or at least cut back when the server is available.

I'll have a think about the thingamabob, the server's currently running on win9x <hawk, spit> so I'd have to put a real OS on there to run a web site 😀 What I might do, in an attempt to cut down on the bandwidth usage and let more people use the server is write a filter to post certain files on certain days on a set cycle. So, for example, a small web interface (pet peeve - large, bulky web sites) which gives a different set of download links everyday run off a database so I don't have to do the changes by hand. But when I'll get the time to write it.....

How's about PFP (Pimply Faced Peer)? 😎 Or NSPFY (Not so pimply faced youth)?

Regarding the thingamabob... well, on one hand Apache, PHP, and MySQL have quite workable win32 versions. Not lightning fast, but then again with the bandwidth we burn on your server, serving requests won't be much of an issue CPU/RAM-wise.

On the other hand... and don't tell anyone, I'm quite proficient in ASP, SQL Server and the like... Access if you twist my arm - I was young, and I needed the money, you see... anyway, if you want to discuss it further, I'm [my_username]@ip.pt

Great clips, BOFH. Thanks for sharing. I noticed you have two Channel X clips in that collection. Just out of curiosity, where did you come across those? I've been trying to find Channel X stuff for so long and haven't really had any luck.

I've got no idea I'm afraid. I've been picking these clips up for close to five years now, and I think those were two clips I found quite early on. I'll try and keep an eye out for any others for you though. Umm, just remind me, what were the filenames again (sorry, only just returned to the land of the awake and for the life of me can't remember what the channel X clips are called right now 🙄 ).

Channel X clips are the ones with file names that begin with cx. You have cx01 and cx02. If you do come across any others, I'd love to know, but, please, don't put yourself out. Just put a shout-out if you happen to stumble across any. With my experience so far, it's nearly impossible to systematically find them--they just pop-up ever now and then.

I got in to see theclips list but it didn't ask for a password. when I tried to download stuff it just said server extended too much information. what does that mean? and how do I see the clips

As a lot of people were trying to log in without a username and/or password I turned on anonymous access. This means that for IE users (amongst others) you won't need to enter a password.

The other part, "server returned extended information", that's harder to track down. I'll assume you're using IE to connect, but this explanation should apply to any FTP software.

What the error means is that the server has experienced a problem and tried to send an error message back to your browser. Unfortunatley IE can't understand text error messages and so shows this 'friendly' general purpose one instead.

There's a few reasons this can happen, but I'd guess at one of two possibilities. The server will disconnect you if you don't perform an action with 60 seconds (with an action being either a file download, moving through a directory, etc). The other option, which is probably more likley in this case, is that there is a maximum number of connections allowed to the server at any one time. If you tried to start a file transfer while the server was full, it would probably generate this error message.

The best I can suggest for now is to try connecting again and see if the same thing happens. Oh, and make sure to copy the files from the server to your local machine before trying to view them. If you've still got problems let me know and I'll have another look.
