And to think I left California to get away from stuff like this...
At approximately 7 am today (Sat. April 20), I was getting ready to leave work from a rare weekend shift when my co-workers and I heard what sounded like the air conditioning rattling or a train going by. Then the birds outside all hit the air at once and the entire building shook for an amazing 60-70 seconds. It was strange to hear it first, I'll tell you that much! I got home and reported it to the US Geological Website, as no news on it had been reported yet. (For more info, it is now posted)
The quake measured 5.1 on the Richter Scale, which is the biggest quake since 1983 in these parts. I live near the city of Plattsburgh in the northeasternmost section of New York State, and we get small tremors from faults running under Lake Champlain occasionally, but mostly of the 2.3-2.5 variety. This one, however, knocked a few things off of shelves, and created a four-foot hole in the road in a neighboring town. Some minor damage, but no reported injuries thus far. It is now said that it was felt from Cleveland to Maine, with its epicenter a mere 15 miles from where I was standing. I was in California during that big one in '89, and this brought back a few interesting memories for several seconds.
What makes this really weird was the fact that, at 2 am this same morning, my area was treated to one of the most vibrant displays of the Aurora Borealis in years. Two very uncommon occurances within 5 hours of each other. Pretty strange day, my friends.
If I see one friggin' locust, I'm going back to bed and I ain't comin' out.
