As New Yorkers who ride transit system are aware, the subway and bus fares will rise again at midnight tonight, to $2.50 per ride. While its the first increase in the nine months I've been here,it seems astronomical for them to charge $2.50 to ride a subway or bus.

Thoughts on this?

Yes it is astronomical but what is your alternative especially in NYC?

I worked for Progressive years ago and NY and PA have some of the highest auto insurance rates in the nation! If you see anyone driving in NYC it is at a premium trust me! That $2.50 is pocket change compared to attempting to drive. Besides I hear that traffic and parking in NYC is ridiculous!

Pay the fare and keep it moving......you're getting the better end of the deal.

In Chicago, fare is 2.25 for a ride, 2.50 for a transfer card that will allow you 3 rides within 1-2 hours.

The day and multi day passes recently went up as follows:

a 1 day pass was 5.75, went up to $10
3 day pass was $14, now $20
7 day pass was $23, now $28
and 30 day pass was 85 or something, now $100

Considering the size of New York versus Chicago, I would say the fare increase really isn't all that astronomical.

Wow! With those fares, might as well drive.......geez!!

What if your a parent? I cannot afford my kid, but that is okay because I need to work...

The subway fare was 15 cents when I was a child (1950's).
It was 50 cents when I moved back to NYC in 1978.
So $2.50 is not unreasonable considering what salaries were like back in 1978.

You might want to reconsider that, kis.

The payment on my Lexus SUV is $475/mo.
Insurance is about another $180/mo.

Add in gasoline, repairs, and routine maintenance at $300-$500/mo, but sometimes more if it's a costly repair.
I had recently buy tires for $800 a set (odd size, they told me) and replace the oil sending unit for $900. Foreign parts kill ya.

Then there's parking which varies wildly from city to city.
I'm lucky, my job pays me a nice car allowance, all fuel and all parking, but I can only imagine what monthly parking rates for work are in NYC. Probably astronomical.

Also, my HOA charges me $500/year for the privilege of a gate pass sticker to get past security and to my house.

So all in all, public transportation is a great bargain.
Unfortunately, with my job it's not an option.

I know you are pushing inflation into the mix, so I will have to rescind my previous post.

Who said you had to own your own car to have a job though? That is a choice, and not forced upon you. Who said you had to own a Lexus SUV to do your job as well? You financed that Lexus by choice, and not by force. I believe Kis' statement had a underlining micro-econometric evaluation. What if she owns all of her cars, and it is not financed? Maybe, she is saying to buy a vehicle that gets you from point A to point B, and not blowing away opportunity costs. Not to mention you can pick the sounds from your speakers, and not wear earphones on the bus.

I can see the hike, it just happens over time, but what pissed me off something fierce today was when I had to pay a $1.00 extra for a new metro card. I usually just refil it anyway but it just so happend that my last one got bent and was not working so I had no choice. I know it's a small thing but it was just enough to rub me the wrong way.
