As everyone who has read my posts knows, I will have been back in NY for six months this coming Monday.
I've technically only lived in New York City for, counting this year, a total of six years of my life. I was born in Manhattan, lived there until I was almost four, lived there again from ages 7 to 9, and then for the last six months here in Forest Hills of course.
As people who live in New York City know, native New Yorkers have a certain "language" aside from the strange accent lol.
Most people who I've ever encountered who are lifetime, long term, or native New Yorkers, have certain ways of desrcibing things.
For example.. when New Yorkers say "The City", they almost are always referring to Manhattan. My friend Barney, even though he went to college with me, and has lived in New York for sixteen years, is from Chicago, and, as I think I've posted before, lives in my building. If he makes a trip into Manhattan, he will say just that, "I went into "Manhattan".
My dad, on the other hand, as most who have read my posts are aware, lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. When he says "The City", he always means Manhattan. If hes coming out to see me, or such. He will sometimes say "I'll come out to Queens, or Forest Hills".
My two aunts were born in the Bronx, and then lived in Bayside, Queens, and Manhattan for many years, and both now live in Northern NJ, not far from where I lived with my mom for many years, and earlier, both of my parents,. Since moving to NJ, I've noticed that lately they have been saying "I'm going into New York" instead of "The City".
One final thought. Even though both Forest Hills, and the boro of Queens, are in New York City, I never say to anyone I know or meet that I live in "The City", because, it would seem that would confuse a native New Yorker into thinking I live in Manhattan. I always say I live in "Forest Hills" or "Queens".,
