help an ignorant foreigner out...

I got an NFL game to see what all the fuss is about, and I don't understand parts of it (surprise surprise). Can you guys answer some of my questions and help me out?

Biggles

Sure...

The part where they "dunk" the football after crossing into the end zone is just for show...lol...did that help? Q

to actually score a touchdown, do you just have to get the ball over the line, your whole body, one foot, most of your body?

Your body is irrelevant to scoring a touchdown, except that you have to be in possession of the ball. The ball merely needs to break the imaginary vertical plane that rises from the goal line, perpendicular to the ground.

Suppose you are holding the ball in your hands, out in front of you. Your whole body could be in front of the goal line, not across it, with the tip of the ball just one iota over the line, breaking that plane. 100% of you and 99.99% of the ball is not over the line, but a touchdown has been scored, as 0.01% of the ball has broken that plane.

However, if you happen to be down before the ball crosses the plane, no points are scored. For instance, if you're holding the ball in front of you and your knees hit the turf prior to the ball dipping over the plane, you're shit out of luck. And hitting the front pylons counts as crossing the plane, as well.

thanks 😀

ok, here's a hard one...

what are the positions and what are the requirements to play in those positions?

Biggles

thanks AMK, very useful 😀 It sure is a hell of a lot of players per team. In other football, players are expected to be able to play offense, defence and kick. I'm getting used to the stop-start nfl way though, it's interesting to see how the other half live (or play).

Specialization..

Really is a factor from the late 70's onwards Biggles. Before that most players did just as you have described, playing both ways, offense and defense. Once a few teams starting platooning though, it become quite apparent that having a well rested, dedicated team for either of these functions was devastating against an opponent whose players were not as well rested or educated. If Tron wanders in, he can give you an example of the complexity of the games schemes. I only played in high school, and even then the playbook was very thick and the learning curve was huge. There's a lot more going on out there than is apparent at first glance. Q

The top three positions are missionary, doggie style and woman on top. I'll let you figure out the requirements to play in those positions on your own.

Oh, wait...I just re-read the subject line of this thread and it's about football. Never mind...😛

Its all very simple Biggles.......

......it has nothing to do with sport, its all about selling McDonalds and Pepsi, I predict that in about 10 years time the game will not actually take place at all unless a given number of burgers and drinks have been sold via a button on the TV remote controll, also by that time any kind of physical contact or risk of injury to the players will have been removed because the sponsers would deem it to be un helpfull for "product placement". The ball will dissapear from the game on the grounds that it is a focus point for violent and inappropriate behaviour (definatley not sponser friendly) and the pepsi executives will push for an "inclusive approach" to the game so that men, women and children of all types and races can take part, so all traces of male aggression will be removed and a more feminine style of dress will be adopted along with gentle relaxing music and a happy ending.....over here we call it Ballet.

blimey!!!!! a bit below the belt!!!!!!!

I think he'll ignore it and pretend it never happened. After all, a cut so close to the bone can scar permanently 😉

Ok Ok I can give credit .......

...where due, and that was a good come back.....but at least its ballet with out body armour, this is where q gets all grouchy and starts on about the war of independance!

No no...

This is where I remind you that basketball is played without any armor, even those sweet little shin pads your boys wear, although you can't seem to give the poor hoopsters any credit for being rough and tumble. These double standards really are NOT indicative of the reputation that we've heard so much about ....British sense of fair play and all that? Are you sure you're really from there...hmmm...food for thought. Q
