Nigerian Woman Wins Adultery Charge Appeal, Avoids Death by Stoning

(AP) - An Islamic appeals court Thursday overturned the conviction of a Nigerian woman sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery, a case that sharpened the divide between Muslims and Christians in Africa's most-populous country. Amina Lawal would have been the first woman stoned to death since 12 northern states began adopting strict Islamic law, or Shariah, in 1999. Four of five judges on the court voted to throw out the case, citing procedural errors in her trial

I've read about the trial a couple months ago. I was shocked to learn about the type of execution for the young lady. Although guy she commited adultery with would face no punishment. A complete double standard.

I would have been satisfied with a "tickled to death" sentence. Aw, well, wishful thinking.

Well, this is a very old Islamic law, and has been carried out many times in the past, but has been dissapearing of late. Women have far fewer rights in countries with Shar'iah than most anywhere else. Sad. I'm glad she got off.

Glad to see things are progressing. I saw a guy in an Arab market the ther day with his hand stitched on. I said,
"I see you won your appeal against that theft conviction then." 😀
