Thank you for the alert! I hope that all of us who have run into or been entrapped by a less-than-honest web site vendor will offer similar alerts.
I, too, was 'lured' into a foot/tickling site (videos, as well) that offered monthly and yearly plans (over $100.00 in cost). I signed up for a year in order to get some of the additional 'goodies' offered by the site. Due to possible litigation, I am advised not to release the name of the
After six months' worth of clicking onto it each day, the site offered very little new materials and I decided to cancel my subsequent year membership. Upon doing so, a message appeared on screen advising me that the FL-based company's policy was not to issue any written cancellation confirmation--just 'trust' that it was done.
I was skeptical, but after trying to enter the site about a week later, my password was refused. I took this as conformation that the cancellation was honored.
Then, when the next anniversary date of the cancelled yearly membership arrived, I got a bill in my credit card statement for another years' worth of fee! I contacted the credit card company, and they were of mimimum help (they just want paid!).
I called a second time, got to someone in the fraud dept at the card company, and forced her to place a call to the website vendor along with me (for third party proof of previous cancellation).
We got the vendor on the phone, and was immediately hostile and defensive--claiming no cancellation was ever made. When I asked why my password would not work if I was still considred a member, his story changed. Somehow, my name and account had been switched into a separate account other than the website, which prompted the new website bill.
He was now trapped in a lie, with the credit card fraud person as witness.
He agreed to cancel the bill, and I asked him to eliminate my name and number from all and any files that his company mainatained.
The credit card company said that any future charges from his company that were based on the alleged recurring membershipo would be billed to me, even if I cancelled the credit card.
Again, credit card companies dont care---they just want paid.
So I wrote and mailed a certified letter to this website guy and his company, CCing the credit card company and my lawyer. I also e-mailed this fellow several times, asking for his confirmation that my name and account # had been erased from all his files.
After several e-mail exchanges, I finally got him to say that my name and # was 'forgotten. That e-mail trail and his response were saved in case I need it again.
The card company confirmed a full credit and urged me to renew my card with them.
I will not renew the card, and I will keep all e and snailmail correspondance from both the credit card company and the website vendor--in uncomfortable anticipation that this bill will recur in 2004!
It was slightly less than a nightmare
for me. Dont let it happenm to you. BE SURE THAT THE WEBSITE VENDOR WILL PROVIDE WRITTEN CONFORMATION OF CANCELLATION BEFORE YOU SIGN ON AS A MEMBER/CUSTOMER.
Too bad there are theives even in our world of harmless and FUN Tickling interests!
