someone has been trying to scare me about if Obama wins..says we will become like those south american countries..a socialist rule...militant government etc..that he is lying thru his teeth..that he has fooled the people..that he will take away the guns..well i don't own a gun anyway..this person i talked to is really upset..

my husband wouldn't like someone like that..and he likes Obama..

I wouldn't worry about it too much, hes probubly a Mccain follower, you would EXPECT THEM To say that just to get you to think that.

In my opinion, follow who you think will lead you into the great country america once was (I'm from wales so I cant say much more than that :\)

I second the Dark Avenger and must urge all to vote tomorrow with their brain, their heart, and their conscience...

And, if you are living in the fine state of California, please, for the love of humanity, civil rights, and human decency: PLEASE VOTE NO on PROPOSITION 8!!!!

First, I saw a sketch on the Colbert Report where the resident British-accented reporter interviewed people at both Obama and McCain rallies, where each one expressed his/her fear that the opponent would be elected. OK, a TV humor bit. Then I read the results of an actual public-opinion poll that indicated roughly half of each group is actually in fear of the opponent being elected. Great millenium this will be.

Just look at what Obama is saying about the coal industry and electricity prices. He plans to charge huge fines to anyone who burns coal and has no qualms about how high it will drive prices for electricity. He plans to bankrupt the coal industry, just what your state needs, Izzy, right?

The San Fransisco Chronicle is just NOW releasing the tape where he freely admits all this. Yet he has the nerve to put out ads about how he will help the coal industry in Southern Illinois. You think gas prices were high this summer? Just wait until he puts this into action...

He's never lead or ran anything, never had to meet a payroll, never even had a meeting of his sub-committee that he is the chair. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing, people. Take off the rose colored glasses and get a real look at him. Don't let your "Bush-hate" cloud your brains.

Nothing personal Izzy, I am just giving you my opinion adult to adult.

Its not so far off from what could happen. We think that just because we are the United States we are immune from turning into Argentina. They were a highly educated, well-heeled group of people as well. They screwed up royally. History is littered with cases were people blindly latched onto charismatic leaders for the vague promise of this amorphous 'change'.

At the very least Obama will raise your taxes (especially when he allows the Bush tax cuts to expire), his policies will cause energy prices to skyrocket. He said that his policies will increase the upfront cost of electricity... with the hope... HOPE... that conservation, tech breakthroughs and some mystical new energy source which nobody is using now will cause those prices to go back down.

But hey if you like having the government control your life like you are a two-year old then by all means vote for Barry. Everybody is entitled to their vote. I am voting for McCain.

Ahem...

Just to let you know, whoever gets elected president tomorrow will probably be appointing anywhere from 2 to 4 Supreme Court justices.

How those justices rule on "obscenity", "protecting children from smut", etc. will determine whether or not sites like this continue to exist and in what form.

How they rule on not only abortion but contraception will determine what form our sex lives will take.

How they rule on church and state will determine whether "religious" extremists get to indoctrinate our children at state expense.

We now return you to the election which is now in progress.

The evidence that Obama is a socialist seems to consist preimarily of his belief in the progressive tax system (the same system that McCain endorsed eight years ago when he decried the Bush tax cuts as irresponsible and specifically assured a young voter that higher rates of taxes for the wealthy did not constitute socialism). Of course, by that measure, the USA has been socialist since around Teddy Roosevelt. It was super-duper socialist under Eisenhower. And Adam Smith wrote of the necessity of spreading wealth around in The Wealth of Nations. And of course, all independent assessors seem to agree that taxes will be lower for 95% of American families under Obama than under McCain.

There are plenty of reasons not to vote for Obama--if you don't agree with the kinds of Supreme Court justices he would appoint, for instance, or if you really think McCain's health care plan is superior. But any criticisms that rest on words like socialism, Islam, associates, or terrorism, or that argue that he's inexperienced or fundamentally unprepared--those are just scare tactics. The same way that criticisms of McCain that lean on words like "erratic" and "out-of-touch" are equally unsubstantive scare tactics.

Similarly, Obama (who has never indicated an opposition to gun ownership) isn't going to take away guns, and McCain (who has never been a passionate opponent of abortion rights) isn't going to throw women's health back into the nineteenth century. These broad-based wedge-oriented scare tactics are designed to frighten and motivate base voters on each side.

You may think the country is tumbling downhill in a particularly nasty handbasket at the moment, and no one knows what the next president will face. But neither McCain nor Obama is positioned to singlehandedly flush the country down the toilet--they're both smart and talented patriots, and they both have the capacity to be effective presidents. I happen to believe Obama is the smarter choice, but I rspect those who prefer McCain, assuming they're doing so for the right reasons.

i don't mind people voting against what i vote for, but there's a level of unnecessary preachery and debauchery and sanctimony that comes with it that's just disgusting because it's needlessly condescending when you should be trying to inform voters of the issues they might be otherwise a little too confused about rather than trying to tell them their god/president/favorite lego set/video game sucks and he won't do the job, and it's really suspicious of what certain underlying doubt people have in the system that they might be hiding underneath the veneer of profession and certainty

people should understand who they're voting for, and they need to understand what they're supporting, and it's ridiculous how people spend a lot more time down-talking other voters about their own choices and bitching about and villifying the other choice rather than showing any real faith in their own chosen candidate's stances or agendas

the one thing i understand is you may think that telling other voters how stupid they are for supporting the opposing candidate(s) will somehow enlighten them but you also have to realize that they are voters and people just like yourself, and the villifying logic is far from convincing anyone they're "wrong" so to speak--you're refusing to talk to them on their level and they're going to react the same. but they're gonna be voting alongside you and if you can't convince your peers that something else might be better in a less pompous and alienating fashion, you're not gonna get anywhere

and furthermore, it's not your job to tell people who to vote for, it is your responsibility however to discuss (responsibly) issues with others and partake in politics in a way that doesn't just consist of running mouths off, and i feel that's what happens way too often

^ wowee...great post..i'm shocked..

remember vote early...vote often....😉

ok

This is going to come as a shock to everybody, but South America isn;t that bad, has anyone here ever been to Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru or Venezuela? No, didn't think so. I have been through South America, the military dictatorship lost its vogue during the 90s, Argentina is thoroughly cuddly at the moment. Chile has a female president, which alot of countries could learn from. Bolivia actually has a Native American in charge, something that we Amerinds have not had since the 1500s.

You won't get stabbed, you won't get eaten, you will not have your property confiscated by men with AK47s screaming "Movimiento Cabron!", believe it or not there is a lot of Democracy here in Latin America now.

Granted there are countries which can do better, but the "evil" Socialist policies of Argentina and Chile and Bolivia and Venezuela has greatly improved the rights for Latinos and Indians. Go to Buenos Aires and see what I mean, go to Tucuman, go to Caracas, alot has changed.

Plus its kinda nice to think that we Indians are getting a little power back (don't worry we won't commit human sacrifice, which in anycase has been proven not to have happened).

Seriously folks, that media portrays us in a negative light, come visit its quite nice here.

aww Redman..i didn't mean the entire country..and i didn't say it anyway..my friend from Texas did..he isn't a member here..i'm sure South America is beautiful..

Tipper Gore was a Democrat. Look back what she did with the PMRC.

There are also quite a few liberal feminists who are pre-abortion would be on-board to shut down a site like this.

I always love how supposedly all liberals are open to freedom of sexual expression and all conservatives want to shut it down. I'm conservative and I'm here. There are other conservatives here. The supposedly fascist, Bible-thumping GOP controlled Washington for how long for two years having total control of Congress... and we're still here.

There will be no shutting down of the internet or sites like this. The genie is out of the bottle. Yes, there is an issue with children having access and that will be dealt with further down the road. However, these sites are not going anywhere.

Sorry, I know it's off topic, but I don't do this often and it has to be said - w00t! Another Welshman on the boards! :ayyy: Maybe we're not such a small country after all!

Izzy

aww Redman..i didn't mean the entire country..and i didn't say it anyway..my friend from Texas did..he isn't a member here..i'm sure South America is beautiful..

I know you didn't say that, believe me you're the last person here I'd believe to be racist or discriminate on nationa origin.

But I really urge everyone, if you take a holiday, go to Cabo, Veracruz, Alcapulco, etc if you're in Mexico or with South America, Rio, Buenos Aires or Macchu Picchu or Cuzco.

The history and architechture, both Native American, European, Mixed and the Arabian architechture is very beautiful and there is alot of diversity.

Anyway as to the elections, my main critique of McCain is not so much his policies (even though I am end of the Earth Commie), its the fact he does nothing regarding the Armenian genocide and supports Turkey going to hunt for Kurds in Northern Iraq, a people they have oppressed for almost a millenium. The reason behind half of the conflicts in the "Middle East" is because of people not understanding the history of the region and the conflicts that exist.

For instance America in general supports Turkey, did you know even discussing the Armenian genocide can get you up to 3 years in prisonment under Turkish Penal code section 301 regarding threats agaisnt Turkishness.

Before you all mistake the Turks and Arabs, the Arabs are a semitic people like the Jewish and Assyrians, the Turks are an Ural Altaic people from Central Asia who invaded the region under Arp Arslan in 1066. Most Turks today are usually of Turkified (linguistically and cultrually) Circassians, Slavs, Greeks, Persians, Arabs, Kurds and Armenians
