Back in the era when almost all adults smoked and smoking was allowed almost everywhere (about 1955, if you want a year), two men both about 70 years old were sitting in a private club. They were the only two people in the members' lounge and they didn't know each other.
"Want a cigarette?" said Joe, as he lit one for himself.
"No, thank you," said Mike. "I tried smoking once, but I didn't like it much."
A waiter entered the members' lounge and asked if they wanted anything to drink.
"I'll have a whiskey and soda," said Joe.
"No thanks," said Mike. "I tried drinking whiskey once, but I didn't like it much."
A half hour passed in silence, both men reading newspapers.
A middle-aged man, Bob, about 45, came in to the lounge. "Hi, Dad, will you and Mom be coming to our house for dinner on Sunday?" he asked Mike.
"Yes, son, we'll be there at eight," said Mike.
Bob smiled and left the lounge.
"An only child, I presume?" asked Joe.
