Now before you ask! When i say online gaming i don't mean those internet games like ping pong or snake but i mean proper computer games like Red Alert.

Do you like playing online against other people or am i actually the only person here who owns computer games?

Well i play final fantasy online and halo 2 online, i wish i could play pc games but i need a better pc.

i proble would play a few pc games online here and there. But i'm like AphxA i really need a better and way faster computer for that! But for now (and proble will be for a long time) its strictly console gaming for me (xbox and playstation 2)

I am playing World of Warcraft at the moment. However, even though it was just released November 23rd, I am already getting bored with it.

Personally, I am waiting for Guild Wars, which is a game made by ex-Blizzard employees - the good ones. It's supposedly focused completely on fun; it has misson-based gameplay; no running around for long periods of time to get where you're going; multi-classing, similar to what Final Fantasy XI has, but a bit different, etc. Plus the graphics look amazing, and it's going to be free online play, unlike all other MMORPGs, which bill you monthly for it. Definitely a plus - especially when you get companies like Square-Enix ripping you off and billing you twice on more than one month, for only one account.

Anyway, yeah, that's all I have to say at the moment. 😀

the hollywood brother is not a big gamer but may start. the hollywood brother just picked up ea sports mvp 2004 and may play online at some point if he can get his defensive playing down to a good game

I'm in the same position as some of you, in that my 'puter is so ancient and slow that it can barely handle Yahoo Pool without crashing >_< If I get a proper machine, I would like to try some of the realistic sports and aviation games that I've heard so much about 🙂

I loved playing yahoo pool back in the day! I haven't played it since then though. since we re-installed our computer with windows xp again a few weeks ago. I think you can play yahoo pool and any other yahoo based game with in the newest yahoo instant messenger now i think? i could be wrong on that though

I play stuff like Call of Duty and Doom 3 on-line, not much good though i get beat by the real addict gamers who play like 4 hours a day............. lol

Yes, RL, you can play Yahoo Pool and some of the other games in YIM v6.0+. I still use an older IM version, so I can only play pool in the browser, but Firefox rocks for that 🙂

I used to, but alot of the problem with the whole online gaming thing was that people were a-holes in those chatrooms, little geeks who made the game their world and their life and ordinary people with lives like me couldn't expect to go in there and just play a friendly game.

Now don't get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with being competitive, I myself have been known to be. Its when people get so into that they have to win no matter what and its no longer about a game or having fun, its about their pride in the little world they created for themselves.

So needless to say, I don't do much online gaming anymore. When I do its against people I know, friends, etc, people I know and can expect will not act like little jerks.

This is ideal for anyone, but the problem is finding online friends or friends you have in the real world who have the same game you do and their computer is fast enough to play it effectively and efficiently online.

Another concern is getting disconnected during a battle. What most of these server hosts do is count a logout or disconnect as a forfeit and loss for you and a win for your opponent. Thats not really fair and something else I don't like.

There was one time where I had built up a massive force and had my enemy right where I wanted him, and I was about to finish him off and then the server had a hiccup and we were both thrown out of the game and back to the chat. My opponent then went on to say to other gamers he almost had me beat. And since theres no way you can prove them wrong, they get away with it, and if they've been around longer than you have people tend to believe them over newbies.

Another mistake and generalization gamers make online is assuming that just because a person is new to a gaming community that he or she is new to the game and cannot play it. As a result, some people get ignored and no one wants to fight them, thinking they aren't a challenge or worth the time.

Although it is funny when they talk smack, decide to fight you, and then you destroy them with the skills of a veteran. LOL ^__^ Sweet.

Whats not sweet though are those trolls and bottom feeders who pretend to suck and tell people they are new at the game in an attempt to get an upperhand on their opponent and an agreement that the opponent will go easy on them at first.

I've had people try this on me, though it didn't work.

I agree with your assessment, Vlad. The gaming society has been terminally messed up ever since Diablo I, in my opinion. Diablo I was at the point at which the game became a hacking contest, because people were cheating rampantly and Blizzard didn't do anything to curb it. This, in combination with the ineffectiveness of our education system, bred the '1337 culture', which in turn led to more gamesmanship and less sportsmanship. The lust for competition becomes a dependancy on one's own superiority. There's more corruption on online gaming servers than there ever was, as the domination of admin over regular user becomes a game in itself. Clans become more important to a kid than their real life friends.
In summary, I blame poor internet gaming ettiquette on the 1337 culture, and the 1337 culture on Diablo.

Vlad's just mad cuz I'm 2 l337 4 him. I actually played online games a little bit. I used to play that "TFC" crap. Team Fortress Classic, or whatever. That was fun, cuz I was really good at shooting games and made people feel stupid for losing to a girl. But that got tiring...lol. I can't condone online gaming that costs money though. That's terrible. Besides, it's not like it's worth it. I've got better things to do then spend money monthly on a video game. I could be watching porn!

I used to be addicted to playing Nox online (seriously the best game ever, where the hell is the sequel?!?!)

Yeah. Those "clans" are really annoying. I fought this kid one time and he kept insisting on me to join this clan of his, and he wouldn't let up. And during the battle he just kept going on and on and on about how important it was that I joined this clan of his, and when I finally got fet up and told him no, he said something something like "you are now unworthy to join the ranks of the (insert his loser clan name here) and you have dishonored me in the rituals of this combat!"

After the battle I saw him talking to other people in the chatroom and he was like "and now we are one step closer to fulfilling our destiny my brothers!"

I swear, I've never seen anything that depraved and degenerative in a long time.

Actually, this was this special on 20/20 one time that I remember. The special was on video game addiction and the main part of it was this one teen who played Everquest. Well, to make a long story short he was playing for so long and he was so into it and did nothing else with his free time, this was his life. One day, his character was killed. His mother downstairs heard a loud shot. She ran up to her son's room to find him slumped over, dead, in his chair in front of the computer, there was blood everywhere (he had shot himself in the side of the head with a shotgun), and she looked up at the screen because noises were coming from it, and on the screen was Everquest.

Really sad.

Rod Blagojevich (the governor of IL) wants to make it a real crime to sell M-rated vid games to a minor. He wants to make it so if somebody in a store did that, they could get a huge fine and up to a year in jail, just cuz they sold a kid some game like..Mortal Kombat. How f*cked is that? 🙁

People destroy video game online line communities. Diablo 2 was destroyed by the people who figured out how to dupe items. Same thing with pso. Final fantasy online community was destroyed by the people who use a pc. They create these computer programs that fish bot. These programs obtain so much gil, they can afford certain items and set the prices high on auction house. Therefore, the auction houses in the game had such ridiculous prices on items. The end result is a cool fun game destroyed because nobody can afford certain items for their characters and they refuse to farm for months for one item, and then they quite.

Yeah, thats the main technical problem, but even if that were not there people would ruin the gaming community experience for others anyways.

I think its more the attitude people in those chats and the tone they take with others which make those communities hostile and unwelcoming. They quite literally make the community their life, and the game their purpose in life. Their reality becomes so blurred and distorted that they don't know any other way, so you can forget talking to alot of them and making friends. Anyone expecting to actually have fun without penalty or the nonsense attached won't get it. Sure, there are some good people, like you and me that don't take it too far, but they are diamonds in the ruff.

And because of these clan things, more and more like-minded people gather together like a gang, and thats not good because then you're not just dealing with one person and their tomfoolery.

I don't know, I'm still up in the air about whether to return to some of those places. Theres only so many online servers to play these games on, and these problems exist everywhere. And while there are rules no one inforces them.

Even in the humble Yahoo game rooms and Yahoo fantasy sports, I see a lot of macho posturing by infantile 13-year old boys. I've even seen creative ways of cheating and manipulating the games. The only way to play there is to create a private room and make it invitation-only. I think the problem of raging hormones and bad attitudes is everywhere on the 'Net, but probably worst of all at game sites that attract large numbers of teenaged boys.

Wow, even in those yahoo games, Val? Thats pretty sad.

Because I'm talking about strategy type games like Command of Conquer, Starcraft, Warcraft, etc where a decent ammount of tactics and forethought is required to play and expected to be even remotely effective and battle-worthy.

But if we're talking about even simple yahoo games then thats really pitiful.

HDS wishes to chime in here with a note about Battle.net (Starcraft and Warcraft (Not World of Warcraft)). Once, Battle.net, the free online multiplayer service of Blizzard, creators of Starcraft and Warcraft, was relatively clean. You could enter it, play a good many games of Starcraft or Warcraft (The versions that connected with it, two and on I believe) without encountering the annoyances already mentioned above me. Nowadays, if you log on to it, it has descended into a chaotic nest of teens and children with no restraint, no control, and no respect for anything. It was a very sad day when I couldn't bring myself to log on anymore due to the stupidity of the majority of players.

Exactly. And they are so damn impatient. They don't even give you a chance to get settled and ready to set battle options and such. Its pretty much like "hurry up, click to connect and lets get this over with so I can fight the next guy".

Pretty damn pushy. Its like, if they don't even want you there then doesn't that defeat the purpose of even being there? They treat it like it's the last day of their life. I know I already mentioned this, but it really bothers me, perhaps more so than the gloating.

Because at least with the gloating you can shut them up really quick by beating them. And if you are playing on a server that records wins and losses, they won't be able to lie and say you didn't win.

The problem with free game servers such as Yahoo or Pogo, aside from all the stupidass clans, is the fact that there is rampant cheating and administrators of these sites (if you can call them that) simply ignore it. Why? Because let's face it, what's going on on the free game servers is a tiny fraction of what the owners of yahoo are worried about on a day to day basis, being a huge site with tons of users doing tons of different things.

I was playing chess on Pogo once and I played this guy who was clearly a hacker as, after I pushed my first pawn, he was able to set my clock to 0:00 and win right away. I was like, WTF!? He replied, 'You run your program on the moves, I run my program on the time'

Anyway I filed a complaint to Pogo admins about this, but guess what, didn't come to anything. So that's my stance on free game servers provided by the huge webhosts. You get what you pay for.

Part of the problem was probably in them even believing you. Afterall, doesn't someone going so low as to hack a game just to cheat at it when playing casually sound silly and unbelievable at first?

Of course, thats assuming they don't know, but they do, so thats a different story.

Unfortunately, Vlad, I have seen cheats or "hacks" for Yahoo and Pogo games offered at mainstream (non-warez) download sites, so any script kiddie can become an instant game hacker 🙁 That's another reason to only play the free games with people whom you know are trustworthy.

Now thats really low.

Does anyone here play Total Annihlation: Kingdoms or Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge by any chance? Just wondering. I didn't think many people played Kingdoms because its getting to be an older game, but when I first played it online there was still plenty of people into it.

Also, does anybody know anything about "Battle For Middle Earth"? I saw it at the store the other day when it came out, but it didn't give me enough information to tell whether its a real time strategy game or its an RPG. The way the box discribed it made it seem like strategy which is what I want.

It looks really promising and you can play online. Only thing is, I don't know that my friends would be able to play it on their computer. I looked at the minimum system requirements and its not that bad actually, but graphically it demands alot. And unless you have a really recent PC, you'd have to buy a graphics card just to see what this game can really do visually.

And I have a laptop, and I don't know if they sell graphics cards for laptops. Laptops aren't cheap to upgrade.
