Tomorrow I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out.

Yeah... yeah! I know I'm late. But I've been in super super pain lately, so they can have them.

Not many things scare me, but ya'll I'm scared. 🙁
It's my first time ever having any type of surgery-related procedure. And the fact that one of my childhood friends died in a dentist chair isn't really making me feel any better.

Sigh... so if you have any encouraging words, post them pretty please. It'll pump me up and get me ready to have my teeth ripped out of my mouth. *whining*

One word...Progress...

3 of my employees have had their wisdom teeh out in the last year and all of them were back to work within 2 days! No probs and no complications....

I remember the day when you were incapacitated for a week with tons of swelling..thank goodness for medical and dental advances...You'll be fine sweetie! (and I'll be thinkin of ya!)

😉

Reply: Oral Surgery!

Keep your head up, Sunrise. I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled in one sitting. I took three days off, but no big problems.

Hang in there sunrise. I had mine out a long time ago. It wasn't painful, I was just a little sore. Mostly it was an incovenience. Worst thing about it as I remember was the fact that I wasn't allowed to smoke afterward for a couple of days.

Just the same, I'll say a prayer for you tonight and again tomorrow morning.

Don't worry, it'll be fine. The I.V. medicine will put you to sleep...well, kind of asleep...you won't be aware of anything, but if the surgeon asks you to open your mouth, or swallow , you'll do it..I guess you could say it's sort of like being hypnotized.

Two important things will make this much easier for you, though.

1. Ask the oral surgeon to take his time..even if it takes around an hour, the more careful he is, the faster the recovery. I would know..my cousins had their teeth out in 15 mins, and didn't recover nearly as fast as me...I had mine out after 45 mins, and all I had was a slightly stiff jaw...even after the novicane wore off.

And 2. Listen to what the doc tells you to do/not do. DON'T eat anything he tells you not to eat. He'll probably tell you to brush extra gently too...so make sure you follow that advice.

You follow those two bits of advice , and recovery will be alot smoother than you think.

Oh, by the way...expect your gumbs where the teeth were removed to feel really weird for about a week or more...it won't hurt...it'll just feel...weird. That's pretty much the best way I can describe it.

As someone who's had lots of operations, I know being put to sleep will feel weird for you...it's strange how being put to "sleep" during oral surgery feels different from being put to sleep during..well, any kind where you're in a hospital.

One last thing....you'll probably be acting weird when you first wake up....your face might be slightly swollen, but you'll probably want to go somewhere other than home. No, I'm not suggesting you go somewhere other than home....you actually will WANT to go somewhere (for example..you might feel like going to the mall afterwards..even though if you were thinking clearly, you actually wouldn't want to. lol)...the doctor told me that happens to other oral surgery patients, too. Strange, huh? lol

It might be best to have someone other than yourself take you back home afterwards. After all, if you'll be so out of it that you'll want to go somewhere after surgery, driving isn't probably a great idea. lol

Poor thing! 🙁

Well, I've seen both ends of it. I had mine extracted when I was 19 (over a decade ago...). I did it over fall break from college. I looked like chipmunk for several days, but the pain really was not too bad. And the dentist gave me something to relax me beforehand. Nowadays, I've seen fellow employees who come back after 24-48 hours and their recovery has been phenomenal!!! I'm sure you'll come through it just fine.

On the flip side, I've done dental work (albeit in animal species). It isn't a lot of fun...so be kind to your dentist! And he/she should be kind to you, too.

Anesthetic wise, we surely have come a long way. But if you have any qualms, just ask an assistant to go over the procedure with you (of course, this may or may not help you relax depending on how you look at it!).

Good luck.....and smile!!! 😀

One of my best friend's wife is having wisdom teeth removed as well. She's nervous, but is having a trusted dentist do hers. I'm sorry about your friend, I've personally never known or heard of someone who had that sort of reaction before. I had to have a lot of caps and root canals from a car accident, so I have some sympathy for ya. I'm sure you'll pull through and be laughing in no time, hopefully from tickles. 😀

Actually Sunrise, I completely forgot to tell you my method for insuring painless dentistry.

:ermm: When the dentist wheels his chair next to mine I reach over and grab his testicles. Then I just whisper, "We're not gonna hurt each other, are we?" :xlime:

Unfortunately this won't really work all that well if he's gonna knock you out for the surgery. Still, keep this handy tip in mind for future visits to the dentist.

I'll be prayin' for ya.

true story

This is my embarrassing dental story. One time i had some teeth pulled. After the novicane wore off, my mouth hurt like hell. Plus, I was drueling like a mad man. I hate the dentist. thats why i stay away from candy now.

If there's one thing I hate more than a toothache, it's a dentist. Highly illogical, I know, but phobias are never very logical.

However, you have the distinct advantage of getting oral surgery right away. My former dentist tortured me in his chair for more than two hours before he sent me to the local dental surgery hospital. He used corkscrew-like tools, and ha gave me 3 extra injections inbetween his futile attempts to remove one of my wisdom teeth. Small wonder I don't like dentists...

The surgery was definitely the easiest part of the procedure; I didn't feel a thing then. I wish he had sent me there straight away. And I was back to work only 2 days afterwards, with nothing more than a light swelling.

Good luck!

Awwwww!

Aw, Sunny hunny, don't fret. All will be well, and you'll be back terrorizing 'lees, and allowing yourself to be terrorized afterwards in no time. And just remember, there are far scarier things in this world....Just take a gander at my forum pic!:sowrong:

Good luck, matey, give us an update when possible! *Hugs*

-Your friendly neighborhood Alex_Warfield.

my dentist has been after me for over 3 years to get my top wisdom teeth pulled. They don't bother me but she says they are so far back that they are hard to clean and will cause problems later...but JPie is one big chicken!!

Good lunck Sunrise!

Sunrise Sexy

Hi, Sunny.

No worries. I had mine removed a few years ago. 4 of 'em. Not much fun, and a little painful for a few days. But ONLY for a few days. After about a half a week, you'll be up to your old tickling tricks again.

One thing... A funny little thing about the general anesthesia that they use for dental procedures. (This is ususally the same anesthesia that hospitals use.) I learned a little tidbit of information that no one bothered to tell me about, so I'll tell you, you that if it happens, you won't get scared:

When I "came out" of my sleep, I looked around, saw that I was still alive (I was REALLY worried about it) and began getting EXTREMELY upset. I cried for about twenty minutes, inconsolably. It was the most horrible cry I'd ever had, not because I was in pain, (there was no pain) but because I had no idea why I was crying!
I later came to the conclusion that my pent-up fear of the procedure finally came out of me when my mind wasn't equipped to cope with it! I cried because I didn't know what else to do.
This may happen to you; my advice is: If something similar happens (everyone, of course, is different) simply cry. Let it out. Enjoy it, because it will be the most sincere cry you'll have for a while. And DON'T BE AFRAID! I wish someone had told me about this.

Otherwise, lots of Jello and Sherbert (Sherbert is better than Ice Cream because it has less sugar... Ice Cream may sting the wound)

If you want, you can e-mail me [email protected]
If not, GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm certain everything will be fine Sunrise. I'll be thinking about you and sending a whole lot of WUV your way.😀 😀 :smilelove :smilelove

The only thing bad about gettin em pulled is that damn IV they stick in ya.... 😡

It's not that bad. Just make sure you have ice pops and plenty of IB Profen, and you will be fine 🙂 Good luck

I hope evrything goes well for you Sunrise I had my upper two taken out when I was in the Air Force It didn't take long at all for them to come out The only part that hurt was the novacane on the roof of my mouth That part was painful It pinched really bad,but didn't last long

Thank you everyone for your encouragement.

Wednesday morning I got a call that the doctor's flight was delayed, so tomorrow morning is the big day.

And even with teeth missing, I'll still have a big mouth so I'm sorry to disappoint those of you who were wishing. 😛

It's not THAT bad getting the I.V. in...at least not compared to getting a novicane shot in the gums..now THAT hurts. Luckily you're out of it before the needle goes in, during wisdom tooth surgery.

Oh yeah, and getting a tube down your nose, so you can swallow it and get it to your stomach so it can suck undigested food out of you (luckily, since I take enough enzymes now, that doesn't happen anymore. arrgh...I hate having Cystic Fibrosis lol) REALY REALLY REEEAAALY hurts compared to even a novicane shot..but that probably isn't something that's ever gonna happen to any you..lucky s.o.b.s lol . Who ever though the back of the nose would be so sensitive to pain?lol

Sunrise

I came in late and did not see or know exactly when you posted this but at any rate and for what it's worth...with todays technology including "Sedation Dentistry", the procedure is painless.
While there may be some discomfort for a while After the procedure is done....it is nothing to worry about. Trust me. I have had work done and this was a few years ago or so when some of the technology was in its' infancy and there was zero pain back then.
It could ONLY be far better now.

TTD😉

Ps. What happens now when wisdom is extracted from you?😀 😛

I just got all four of my wisdom teeth out a couple weeks ago. It's not a huge deal, and I had never been in any kind of surgery before, and had never been put to sleep for anything. For me they used both laughing gas and an IV. I did really well till about the 3rd day when it started hurting a lot more, and by the next couple days had to do something. Turns out I had dry sockets on both sides, which while it sucks before you get something done, is easily dealt with. I'm totally fine now, I was just unlucky I guess. I did everything I was supposed to, but the surgeon said it looks like my blood clots just tried to heal me faster than the rest of me was ready for. I'm completely normal now though. Oh, PS, you're never gonna wanna see another mashed potato again after the coming week. Good luck! Mwah!

Well... I made it through surgery.

The worst part was waiting. I was in extreme pain when I entered the dentist's office at 10:45. At around 1:00 the dentist called me back and gave me about 8 shots to "ease" the pain. The shots hurt so bad that it brought tears to my eyes... and then by 2:15, the pain was back again. (Was I going to go back and get more shots? OH NO!!!!!!)

So, I ended up sitting there until 4:15. The only thing I felt was the pinch from the IV... and I was awake while they stitched me up. That's it.

I'm still numb. I hope I don't get "dry sockets". I know it is bad, but I don't know what it is exactly. How do you know if you have it? Sigh....

Anyway, thank you everyone once again. I'm still sleepy though, but I have to sleep sitting up. 🙁

Take Care,
Sunrise

If this message made no sense, remember I'm on tons of meds.

Most important thing here,Sunris, is that you made it through and did it. Rest well.

TTD

PS. For those who did not understand Sunrises' last email, take some meds and come back to read it again. It will look much better then.
😀 😉 😛

I'm glad you made it through okay Sunrise.

The best I can remember, dry sockets are caused by smoking. So don't. Drink plenty of fluids, follow any advice the doctor gave you, and get some rest. :twohugs:
