Oscar-winning film star Ernest Borgnine dies in LA at age 95

My favorite Ernest Borgnine movie:

I forgot about Mermaid Man!

How can you forget Cabbie in Escape from NY or the General in The Dirty Dozen

Everybody remembers his hit TV show, McHale's Navy, of course, but to me his most memorable role was the lonely butcher in the film Marty.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Borgnine.

It was "Marty" that earned him an Oscar and presented by Grace Kelly.

RIP Mr. Borgnine. You entertained us for many years.

Ugh I was just watching McHale's Navy on Antenna TV when I learned the news, still bummed.

I heard the news on the radio this morning. From Here to Eternity and Marty are two of the best films ever made. He earned an Academy Award as Best Leading Actor for the latter film. A wonderful actor and, from what I've read a fine man. R.I.P. Ernie. 🙁

That was an awesome performance, I agree that it was his best. I really liked him in From Here To Eternity too; he conveyed malevolence toward Old Red Eyes very convincingly.

He made a great bad guy. Especially in Convoy as the sherrif who hated truckers, and as Dutch,in The Wild Bunch.

The Wild Bunch was a great bit of casting with Borgnine and William Holden. Those roles were made for those guys.

Yeah, Osprey, anybody that beats the shit out of the "Chairman of the Board" can't be all bad. He played well the heavy, action roles, comedy and won the Oscar as the cast against type lovesick butcher, Marty. We should all be so versitile.

He played various roles in his career, I am glad that I saw some of them. RIP Ernest Borgnine.

He, Andy Griffith, and Raymond Burr played some of the best good good guys and the worst bad bad guy roles. That was when actors had to know how to do everything; sing, dance, and act. He was a true entertainer who lived a long life. Good for him and I hope he has a great time in the next life too.

Mermaid Man was one of my absolute favorites from Spongebob...sooo funny! He'll be very, very missed!

Some trivia.

Leonard Nimoy (of Star Trek fame) played in the Western on TV called "Wagon Train" along with Ernest Borgnine.

Much as I admire Mr. Borgnine's fine performances in good movies like BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, MARTY, and PAY OR DIE, I'm reminded--looking over his filmography upon his passing--that, to his credit, in all the years, he never phoned in a job. His measure as a true movie star and solid pro was never more clearly demonstrated--and desperately welcome--than in such dire flicks as WILLARD, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE DEVIL'S RAIN, and THE BLACK HOLE. He made even the damnedest nonsense watchable.
RIP, paisan.

Well said sir, well said.
