I dont normally post but i just felt like i should try at least once to see how it is. Anyway i saw this photo in a magazine just now and it made me think about the difference in our genders. The photo was a man walking out side in parking lot (i think) whitout his shirt and next to him was a woman walking topless. It was the first time the difference stood out so much, i know the difference between boys and girls but never really cared that much. I was wondering if its just me as a male that when both are put next to each other the girl stands out more or its something else. It just seemed odd, were the same species but to me the gender differnce stood out more in that photo than it normally dose. I wonder what everyone thinks about this. Well i just wanted to say something and try posting for once, if you read this much thanks for your time.:sleep1:

Because it's not usual to see a topless female yes i can see why it would stand out to you...and it's not fair either...often in the summer months, if i'm out walking, i get rather hot and would love to remove my t shirt...but it's forbidden...

It's interesting that you posted about that topic. In classes that I have taken and some I am taking now, we are discussing gender differences. And yeah, I agree that it's different and more stand out...ish to see a female topless than a male because seeing a female in that way is not the norm. It's like when you see people in their bathing suits, males wear swim trunks (or some even wear speedos!) while females wear bikinis or one-pieces or tankinis. The thing is that a lot of females tend to be more self-conscious about their bodies and so they, therefore, cover up areas of their body that they do not want seen by the public.

I understand what you're saying too though, Isabeau. It does get very hot out in the Summer and sometimes, even wearing the thinnest clothes does nothing to help.

Like everyone said it's usual to see men without their shirts while it's unusual to see women do the same. Maybe if they were both bottomless they would both stand out the same though

uh hahahaha i believe the men would stand out more if bottomless.

Does anyone else think that its kinda of... a blow to civil liberties that women can't go topless in the streets without it being taboo but men can? People say words like "sexually obscene", but honestly... they're just breasts. They're just like the guys, only bigger. You ever heard that people only want what they can't have? Maybe breasts carry this huge sexuality BECAUSE they are covered up and "forbidden" as you put it.

Covering up body parts that when shown indicate sexual promiscuity... What does that remind you of? Full body burka's instantly come to mind when I think of that.

Every society has different social norms. For instance, when it comes to The Tauareg of north Africa, the men wear veils, while the women show their faces. Also, in some sub-saharan african tribes, women go topless. In others, men go bottomless. I'm sure these people would find it weird that women have to cover their breasts.

So, why are women's breasts taboo in some countries? The same reason they aren't in others... social norms.

I totally agree. It may seem crazy and stupid, but that is the law. If enough people think that it should be changed then it will. It is as simple as that. Social norms are always evolving over time. Tradition is not static. It does change over time.

I like it the way it is. Quite frankly there are a great many people I don't want to see walking around naked. Yes, a body is just a body, but I do like something for the imagination to ponder over. Once you see the goods the mystery is over. Quite frankly I do not want to be de-sensitized. Life would be boring.

Now as for public breastfeeding. Yes, a woman should have a right to do that for her child without the public going crazy. If a woman feels comfortable whipping it out in the middle of a Walmart then more power to her. People are going to gawk and be a bunch of idiots about it, but hey that is the world we live in.

Kinda branching off what what FD said about breast feeding, there may be something significant about it. I think I read in an old article somewhere, that a big reason women began covering their chests in the first place was that their breasts were considered sacred. They were considered so, because of the breastfeeding. They essientially gave life to their nursing babies, an act that was thought of as giving some of the mother's life to the child. In a way, the "taboo" is a way of honoring mothers and women in general.

I think the main point of contention is the covering of REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS (both men's and women's) as well as any other organ that has to do with reproduction/child rearing (aka breasts). I think your question isn't so much a gender question as it is a "why do humans cloth themselves" as most men and women wouldn't even THINK about going out in public naked (many men have a had time even going out bare chested).
