I know this will probably sound like a bigot thing to say, and I'm by no means a close-minded person, but is it just me, or does it seem like every other person you see on tv is gay now? Every time I sit down to watch a little television, there's some random gay guy on the screen who is so flaming he could put a lisp in the word "cracker." Is there some law now that states that one out of every three people who appear in the mainstream media be homosexual? I think it all started with "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and the whole thing took off like a pink rocketship with a glittery unicorn on the side. And the unicorn had a rainbow on it's ass-cheek.
I know it shouldn't bother me, but what happened to all of the MANLY men? Are there any left out there? Where's all the strong male role models we grew up with? Where's all the cigar-chomping bad-asses with hearts of gold? Where's Tim Allen when you need him?
Now I have nothing against being gay. Hey, like Bill Engvall said, if sex wasn't involved, I could be gay. It's just hanging around with your buddies. But this whole thing of being beaten over the head with the entire genre is pissing me off. I shouldn't have to be subjected to it at such an insane level, and I hope someone out there agrees with me.

Yeah, just like being black is in.

Not that i have anything against any person of a minority getting on television, but it just seems to me like the majority of characters on TV whether they be black, or gay, or whatever, aren't so much fleshed out, well developped characters or real people, but more like comical, tokenistic stereotypes to give the impression that TV is politically correct, but then again that's just how i see it.

I understand both of your opinions and totally agree with you. I have nothing against homosexuals either, but it frustrates me when I am sitting at the computer or watching television and suddenly, "Hey! Wassup little man!" or some other crazy thing like that pops in my face. That and Porno.

As one of the resident "homos" of this site, I have to agree with aspects of the original post...I agree that the "stereotype" of gay men and women is portrayed all over mainstream media nowadays...and THAT pisses me off, to be blunt. If they would just show regular folks, not characters or stereotypes, who happen to have jobs, relationships, issues just like everyone else and also happen to be gay, it wouldn't be such a big deal...but the way it is now is a slap in the face to those of us who are just your average joe, working and living and who happen to be gay...

I actually agree in this instance...normally, I would say that one could never have too much/an overflow of homo!!! Cheers!

They're doing it to please gay people, similar what they did to African Americans in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Gay rights is a major issue, and the mainstream is generally liberal. So naturally they want to show that off. It's sad because being Gay, or Bi, is becoming a fad. It annoys me just as much as you. They're making it look like being Gay is like a style of clothing. It's rather disgusting. I'm all for acceptance, but this is just too much. It's almost as if you're not Gay, you're not cool.

It's just to try to 'equalize' the community and what they see on TV...though yes, white people, those of European descent, do seem to be vanishing...along with the straight...and yes, it is very stereotyped. Not every homosexual individual acts like the guys on Will and Grace😛

I beg too slightly differ with you, highwing. LA and Hollywood mainstream is liberal. I'm not so convinced that all 'mainstream' America is. Of course, it depends on your definition of 'mainstream,' since many liberals think that only they are mainstream and conservatives are not. And, of course, the 'drive-by' media does it's best to promote that (incorrect) train of thought.

My take on it, "I don't care, just don't force it on me".
By the way, this is a first good try for a rant...but a little more devil may care attitude would've been more persuasive.
(I just set up my own punchlines)

Well, the mainstream media puts out whatever it can sell. If including gay perspectives (or stereotypes thereof) stops making money, they'll definitely stop doing it.

(Side note: is Tim Allen a real man? I always thought he was kind of a pantywaist. He was funny once, though: in Galaxy Quest. I think all the real men these days come from Australia. And, occasionally, Ireland.)

My theory is that if it works for a given role, or it works for a given series...hey whatever. If it is forced or contrived? It stops being entertainment, which is inherently what television is supremely supposed to be.

I do not watch TV...I listen to the radio a lot more often (down to the fact that I pay to streamlink some shows and have them as podcasts on my mp3) mind you, but that fact has more to do with oversaturation of crap television and celebrity shows as well as trying to be creative in my own outlets.

But if it fits, it fits.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that people are more open minded these days... Or, maybe I should say people are less iffy about things. You see all the talk about allowing gay people to do this and that... When back in the older days, being gay was a cause of ridicule and at times even a cause for getting hurt.

Nowadays, at least from what I see, people are less likely to attack someone different from them, and thus gays are coming out because it's safer than it was way back when.

I got bored, and randomly saw this. Anyway, from what it seems to me. The person who said, "T.V. is mostly Liberal." This is mostly true, and gay rights is a huge thing. Though it does sort've piss me off, cause they get some annoying ones as well as some cool ones. Though the really gay ones end up being stereotypical, lisp, annoying, kinda gay. Though it is a sort've, "If you don't accept gay people, you are closed minded, your against them." This is why shows basically who don't have put a gay person, can be sued by a gay person who gets rejected.

I'm not for gays, and all. Though I'm not against it, I don't believe two men is right, and I don't believe two women is right. Even if I feel it's wrong, I'm not against them, I don't hate people just cause there bi, gay, or lesbian. I actually have a few bi friends, and I know some gays. I don't have any lesbian friends as of now. Though if I met some I would just treat them like who they want to be. I know some gay guys who are totally cool, and than I know some who are totally jack ass.

Anyway, the way I believe it works is this. Gay rights become a big issue, so like every other huge issue you end up having people who attempt to sue you, and say "You are against me, cause I'm this." I bet some show got sued for this, and it probably scared the rest.

No, it's just you

I don't know where this paranoia is coming from, but everytime I see a gay character on TV(which isn't very often), the character is usually a minor one and stereotypical. So I doubt they're replacing your "role models". Also, the idea that you feel like they're beating you over the head with the genre shows you're too obsessed with the issue. It's not that hard to get away from really.

Do House or any of the CSIs or any of the Law & Orders or The King of Queens or Everybody Loves Raymond or Heroes or 24 or Scrubs or Lost or Gilmore Girls or 30 Rock or My Name is Earl or Two And a Half Men or Criminal Minds or NCIS or Monk or Friends or Seinfeld have any recurring gay characters?

Surely most (if not all) of them don't. And I'm guessing none of them has been threatened with a lawsuit.

In fact, looking at the above list: where exactly is this overrepresentation of gay characters we're concerned about?

South park had it right, the episode where they say shit on tv and mr.garrison says you can only say fag if your gay.
Even though fag means cigarette over here.

Before I had saw the show, I had thought the King of Queens was about a gay guy.

Of course, I saw the show, and realized I was completely wrong.

I think it was when I saw the episode when he got his own apartment and that lady came over, and I didn't realize that was his wife, she was just some lady, and his apartment was all clean and stuff.

But, yeah, I hadn't seen the actual show yet.

My Name is Earl actually does have a recurring gay character. He played an important part in the first episode, and was really, really funny, without being like stereotyped or anything.

Damn, I love My Name is Earl...:super_hap

p.s., Scrubs has The Todd, whatever he is...

Political Correctness sucks and is contraproductive.
Nowadays it's 'in' and a 'must' to (over)promote homosexuals, minorities of all types etc to the extreme over here. Which actually has the opposite effect on me and most people. If the so called 'good' people who lecture/whine about 'correct' views didn't always do that you'd see a lot of less agitation towards homosexuality etc.
If you're gay that's just fine but i really don't see why it has to be pushed into my face every day over and over. (not to mention other political correctness favourites) Do what you want in your house, room, whatever. But if you keep getting the same message stuffed through your throat or half the caste of a show is absurdly beyond the 'norm' (guess using that word is very politically incorrect too? 😛 ) you just start getting grudges or worse.

It's like over here the politicians saying THEY are democrats and party X isn't, idea Y isn't democratic and just because the majority of the people want B to happen that doesn't mean they should listen to it because they're true democrats. It has the opposite effect too. The same goes for overpromoting certain sexual... tendencies, preferences or certain beliefs etc that aren't part of the leidkultur. Just let it be, have it pop up but don't start some excessively absurd campaign in all the media and shows because you'll just achieve the opposite of what you want.

I completely disagree. See, I think I feel so strongly about this because it reminds me so much of when I was learning about how black people had to fight to gain rights and acceptance here. Overpromoting, as you call it, is the only way for anything to change. If people don't cause a stir, people won't take notice and things will stay the same. It's probably due to this that they gained as much acceptance as they do now.

I also want to restate that I think this overpromoting everyone keeps talking about is a myth. Sure some people announce it more loudly than others but if you're truly accepting, you wouldn't feel it's being forced on you. If you really think it's being shoved down your throat, stop watching LOGO.

I LOVE Logo...

Fascinating...Umojar, I agree with you...

Seriously folks, after reading a few responses on here, all I can say is some of you must really be watching too much TV...get off the couch and go vent some of your pent up frustrations through physical activity or something...seriously...relax!!!
