My friend found this kinda messed up--and yet great golfing RPG type game. It's called Pangya.
It's a mixture of basically 2 things.
Gunbound (and if you don't know what gunbound is, look it up on Google or something, because it's great), and Hot Shots Golf. It kind of reminds my of Mario Golf a little too.
Anyway. The system for items and such is the gunboundy part. It's more like Hot Shots for a few reasons. With your virtual money (pang, as they call it) you can buy actual characters, and their own unique outfits as well. For those who havn't played hotshots, it's like many other golf games, but it's anime style. Along with chars and outfits, you can buy different kinds of balls, club sets, and even caddies.
One downside, if you can handle it, is that the game is only in Japenese. But, the interface is easy to memorize, and I happened upon an FAQ for the game that teaches you everything you need to know, from signing up, to playing the game. Plus, it's worth the trouble if you get into this game. It's quiiiiite addicting.
For anyone interested, here are the links.

http://www.gunbound.net <---there's gunbound (it's pretty good as well, possibly even more addicting.
Both Pangya and Gunbound are free games btw.
