A backward culture, particularly one with a warrior tradition, will always misinterpret restraint as weakness and irresolution. Western countries knew this, and acted accordingly, until the mid-20th Century. Now we're having to re-learn it.

We set ourselves up for 9/11. The Iranians held our embassy hostage for over a year, and Carter did nothing. Hezbollah and Hamas kidnapped and murdered our diplomats in Lebanon, bombed our embassy and the Marine Barracks, and Reagan did nothing. Bush Senior won the Gulf War but stopped short of finishing it. Al-Quaeda bombed the WTC and two embassies, and Clinton did a drive-by shooting with Tomahawk missiles. In all of these, our response was according to the orthodoxy of the foreign policy establishment, which is dominated by appeasers.

9/11 got our attention. Bush Junior promised to kill terrorists and destroy governments that aided them. He made a good down payment on that promise in Afghanistan. The result in the Islamic world has been new respect born of fear.

Terror works both ways, friends and neighbors. It can be used to make it clear that attacking the USA will bring death to the attackers, overthrow of their government sponsors, and if they piss us off sufficiently, the destruction of their entire culture. It won't be missed.

Listen REAL hard, and you can hear the hushed awe of amazement thoughout the Arab world at what has happened to the "invincible" mountain strongholds that comprised the defense of Afghanistan...one at a time men, one at a time. They think themselves warriors...they wouldn't last a day in NYC.

Colin Powell said the world denies that America is the world's policeman. But who do they call when they want a cop? Interesting to find out who our deputies are! And grateful that they are there, I might add. I think our current actions truely are more about securing the Big L than it is about hunting one man...but the spinless bastard is an easier target than the social conscience of a depressed region.
