Poll: Should English Be the Official Language in America

Do you support officially making English the language for all public purposes: i.e.; recorded telephone information; governmental forms; nonprivate school lessons; etc.

i say yes. it gives a cohesive common experience to all americans, and helps assimilate new residents.

LOL, I was going to ask the same thing! It seems like it's different things in different parts of the country (kind of complicated, but hey, so is everything else here)

I believe that the language is now becoming known as "American" to distiguish it from the true English.

We use the letters "X" and "Z" a lot more places where the Brittish and those who speak with that accent tend to use the letters "S" and "C".

I believe that there was a furor raised when a certain city (mid-west, somewhere, I think) decided to pass an ordinance that stated the official language of their town was American in their dealings of public laws, signs, and so forth.

If I remember correctly, California voters chose to demand that a kid speak English in order to enroll in school. Those great California Courts decided that that was a violation of human rights or something, so what the voters chose was thrown out of the law.

Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

When I used to work at West, it was general consensus that you should have to pass an english proficiency and/or IQ test to be allowed to have a phone

I think everyone should speak English as a primary language, but we should also strive to be bilingual as well (that almost sounds obscene, shows you where my mind is at lol) I'm currently studying Spanish as a second language, and would like to add others to it once I'm proficient. Just my (not so humble) opinion.

there is nothing wrong with being bilingual at all very commendable....but i dont agree with people speaking only spanish and not learning english as well as living in the US and hearing more spanish then i do enlgish..sorry if that offended anyone i tried to be conservative...and by the way i have nothing against foriegn people in general

i'm a foreigner. my mother was a foreigner. and her mother before that!

A no Brainer here. Definitely yes. No reason is needed. This is America and English is the main language and should be the official language. If one were to go to Spain, is not Spanish the official language there? If one were to go to France, is not French the official language there? IF one were to go to Arabia....
I know some people, for instance, a person from Cuba....who has lived here for over 30 years, not a typo, 30 friggin years and still does not know a word of English and what is more incredible, she was given citizenship in a lottery some time back and STILL has yet to learn the language.
I wish I know MY own heritage language, Italian but even if I were to have come over here from Italy if I were born there, I would learn the English. Would or do other countries make the same consolations to English speaking people as liberally as America does?
