Is privacy only good because people have tendencies to act badly?

Think, write, share. :smilestar

Good topic, Cap. I suppose it can go either way. For instance, I enjoy privacy when I'm on the TMF because no one in my vanilla life knows that I come here. Could this be considered acting badly? I suppose that depends on your view of fetish material.

On the other hand, let's say I've had a bad day at work. Afterward, I decide I need some downtime. Not intending to act badly by any means. It may simply be that I require that time to recharge my batteries without distraction.

As well, couldn't acting badly be when someone takes advantage of such private knowledge about you and chooses to spread it in order to damage your reputation elsewhere?

But is that really privacy? Is the fact that you need downtime something you need to keep private?

Thanks for the response! 🙂

privacy can be used for so many things, to cover up/hide things about you that could be viewed as bad by others, in this case I would say it's good, some secrets are for you. It's not particulaly bad to have things to hide, it's good to have some things all to yourself. Then there's things that are truely bad, things that should be let out for your own good or someones else's, in this case, the ability to obtain privacy could end up damaging. Then there's truely innocent things, As an example playing a guitar alone undisturbed in your room, you want privacy so you can concentrate. To answer your question simply I would say in my opinion no, privacy is useful because we have tendencies to do things alone. Sometimes it'l have bad intent, sometimes good and sometimes it's down to opinion, but I wouldn't say privacy is ONLY good because we have tendencies to act badly, there's way more to it.

I think we all need a little prvacy just to process the day's events at times....not just a little down time, but a set amount of time and space to call our own where we can ponder, reflect, process, and renew ourselves..

I have always been a rampantly aloof, strangely private person.. believe it or not.. dammit. I've almost worked at my job a full year yet maybe only 5 people know my name there. It's always suited me better that way, the less people know the better. My privacy barrier has always been strong and wide (just like me)yet somehow, lately, it's been kinda thrown out the window at home. In some ways i'm still adjusting to not having hours upon hours in solo privacy, but it'sa change i'm readily accepting. With me, i guess alot of my privacy issues spawned from the idea that prolonged exposure to me would drive ANYONE insane.

Hmmm...I guess I see this a bit differently.

I relish and carefully guard my quiet time. It's where I relax and refresh... and often sort out anything that may be an issue for me at the moment. However, I'd refer to this more as solitude than as privacy.

"Privacy" I consider more to be having that solitude for a specific purpose. It can be simply wanting to be able to do something without an audience. (ie - Most of us want privacy when we're bathing or dressing.). In some contexts, it can also be a way of ensuring confidentiality and/or avoiding unwanted questions if, say, you're on the phone with a friend in crisis or something. Some things are simply personal and you may not feel like sharing them with others.

Ooh,...good thread Capn!

I think privacy is a good thing. Not everyone needs to know what I do all the time. Hell, not everyone WANTS to know what I do all the time. So in that context, I think privacy is good. People need privacy in some situations, and they all don't necessarily have to be a bad situation. Of course it's up to the individual whether they actually want to share something or not.

Privacy can be bad when people are trying to hide something that actually needs to be shared. Humans are evil. We do bad things. Human nature is to hide those bad things we do, and not to bring them out into the open.

And if you actually followed all that, you're WAY smarter than I am, lol.

Ah! Thank you, Ann. That's exactly what I'd been thinking with regard to privacy -- I think of privacy of information automatically -- confidentiality, really, not solitude. That's how I was thinking when I first heard the question myself...

That was really more how I was hoping folks would answer the question in this context, because I think the notion of privacy as solitude allows deft but total avoidance of the "people acting badly" premise.

No problem, Cap. As far as your first question, absolutely. This has, unfortunately, happened to me a few times before.

The second, I'd say that there are times when I'll tell someone in advance. Might mention that I'm going to turn off my cell phone so that I can have some peace and quiet for the night. I rarely need to do that, though.

Yes,i agree. And i need solitude sometimes as much as i need air to breath.I often think of myself as a sociable hermit if that makes any sense.

Privacy is generally a good thing.

Too much is not.

Concealment is never a good thing.

I personally don't associate privacy with 'acting badly'.

Quite often I think the opposite is true.

Privacy is good because in the end no one knows us better than ourselves. Taking some time to get your thoughts together or whatever is quite healthy.

Just remember to interact when possible (I'm one to talk:facepalm:)

I personally think privacy is an underrated concept particularly here at the TMF. Seems like some people just can't resist pouring out onto these pages every bizarre and twisted thing they are into. Christ, I just got finished reading a thread about a guy voluntarily suspending himself with meat hooks into his skin.

And then there's all the "I miss you so much" and "I omnom you" gobbledy-gook that has no place in public conversation. Sometimes I wonder if TMF doesn't stand for Too Much Flattery.

As for me, I'm fairly gregarious but I do cherish my times of solitude. There's a certain indescribable comfort in knowing that one is secluded from prying eyes.

That's interesting. Why so?

IMO, because it constitutes guilt or a feeling of wrong doing.

If you/I/we didn't think it [something] was wrong, we wouldn't try to hide it.

Privacy is saying: 'Look, I need some time alone.'

Concealment is saying: 'Crap, I have to hide this.'

Just the way I see it.

Privacy is very important, but it can be taken to extremes for personal benefit; heck, here on the TMF grown men in their 50's will be cowardly enough to use false screen names, even pretending to be the opposite sex :xlime:, just to hurt and insult and back up their own ridiculously narrow-minded and cretin stances on topics about which they have no real knowledge. Privacy is important, but not when it turns you into a filthy liar :disgust:

God, it's about time somebody spoke to this. It's getting so that I don't want to log into the TMF unless I have my Dramamine handy.

Privacy is a good thing especially for that stuff.

It sounds like you are suggesting that anybody who logs into the TMF under a false screen name is a filthy liar. Do you realize you're talking about the vast majority of TMF members? Very few (if any) of us log in with our real names. It protects our....say it with me now....PRI-VA-CY!

Some of us have more than one screen name. I do. So do many others. There's no rule against it, and it doesn't make filthy liars out of any of us. You might consider doing a U-turn with that pointing finger of yours.

Good try.

I have absolutely no issue with multiple screen names provided they're used for benign and positive purposes, that is indeed a valid and proper display of privacy. But using them to insult and hurt other posters, or to back up and support one's own views posted by the original screen name, makes one a liar and a cheat and a coward in my opinion and I have no problem expressing that. Amusingly, those who have an issue with this view on the subject and try to defend such vile behavior tend to be the very perpetrators of such cowardice. Now having said that, I've no wish to hijack this thread any further over the testicular deficiency of certain poor souls, and I'll not continue discourse here; you're welcome to PM me under your regular screen name like a man, should you wish to continue this discussion.

...and not with the female version of your screenname, lest you prove her point.

To the point:

Privacy is like time - it is relative. Some people value their privacy. Some people have things to hide. Others don't care what others know about them, and therefore make little to no effort to hide details about themselves.

Being affectionate on the intarwebs and flattering others isn't something that should be frowned upon unless said frowner is simply jealous of the fact that no one likes them - but who are we to judge? It's an open forum and users may interact in any way they wish, even if that involves divulging personal details about themselves.

I personally don't mind if someone knows my real name or other certain details about me. There are some things I keep to myself, though.
