Problem looking at tickling pics: graphics deteriorating.

Over the past week or two I've noticed the qualities of my pictures deteriorating. They have an almost "ghost-like" quality to them now, that reminds me of how they'd display if Windows 98 was working on safe mode. It looks almost like there aren't enough colours available to make a high quality picture. That isn't true because I've got a 3200+ Athlon CPU and a Radeon 9800+ graphics card and until recently I had perfect pictures.

Does anyone know why this could be happening? :cry1:

1) Did you accidently chage your screen resolution or other settings? Confirm them.

2) Is your screen failing? Your screen might have reached it's lifespan and is quietly dying.

3) do you have the virus that slowly lowers pixel brightness by a point or so each day, eventully leadign to a black screen in about five months?

1. No, it's not been changed. It's on the highest resolution possible.

2. The screen is an 18" TFT monitor that is less than a year old, so I'd guess not.

3. I regularly update and scan my Norton Anti-Virus and Personal Firewall. If the sneaky little bugger got past the firewall, wouldn't the AV smack it? I run AV total system checks at least once a week. Also I don't think the screen is getting darker at all, just the pictures are getting worse. They are beginning to look like they're made up of bands of colour, very garishly. Got the shit toally beat out of me.

What's the name of the virus?

Jim, you didn't say if it was only your pictures or everything looks like that. If its only your images do they all have the same file extension.... .jpg etc. Have you viewed them in a different program.
Mail me one if you want and check it out.

My desktop picture is going the same way. Things like this forum page aren't sufficiently detailed to show the deterioration as yet.

How do I view them with a different program?

When I was viewing Bitmap images and JPEGs on my old Windows 98 model, they both looked different as if different programs were used to view them.

Now I have XP both types open in the same sort of window. And yes, both types of image are getting worse.

Is your colour depth set to 32-bit?

Can you take a screenshot by pressing print screen and host it somewhere? (Be sure to save it as .bmp; .gif or .jpeg would introduce artifacts that wouldn't help us analyse the problem)

Yes, it is on 32-bit.

Another thing I've noticed happen twice, is the pics will suddenly "cure" thselves, then revert back to crappy, then cure again.😕

Sounds pretty peculiar. A screenshot might help. Which ATI driver version are you using? Do you have the latest monitor driver too?

Did you happen to try lowering the color depth to say 16 bit or something as an experiment? If not try it. It's definatly not your files if your desktop and other images seem bad. I think you have a hardware problem Jim , new or not things go bad. Beg borrow or steal (of course thats just an expression!) another monitor to try something. That will rule out the monitor or prove its the monitor.

Will try. Don't know where I can get one from though.

ATI driver here , monitor driver at the manufacturer's website too. Not sure it'll solve the problem though, I've never come across anyone describing a gradual deterioration in images before!

Jim,

I've only now become aware of your computer problems. All I can say is "Ha! Ha!"

Now be honest David, you couldn't have had a better cue if you'd paid me to do it.

Yes Jim, you are the proverbial "easy target." Nothing like a good laugh at your expense. I'll be chuckling to myself about your monitor difficulties for days.

If there's one thing the English are good at, it's providing cheap laughs. Look at the country we invented on the other side of the Atlantic. :blaugh:

😀 😉 :dogpile:

Wasted on me mate. My view doesn't normally rise above her ankles. 😀
