Hey there!

My hubby and I are thinking of going to Canada soon. We've heard stories about the border patrol looking through people's computers and fining them if they see anything at all they deem to be pornographic. Is this true? I often take my computer in trips which contains not just work related stuff, but my stories and collection of tickling related art. Is that a dangerous thing to travel with? And what about logging into this or Deviant Art? Dies Canada have any laws against that?

Just trying to know for our trip. Thanks for any advice you have!

I'm not sure if that's true or not (Though I do remember hearing something about some guy getting booked at Canadian customs for having manga on his laptops hard drive a few years ago) However, as a safe suggestion I would upload stuff you'd consider lewd or illegal to a secure online cloud storage and then retrieve it once you're safely nestled within the bowels of Canada.

Seems most of your questions have been answered, I am not all too familiar with border patrol but as to your question about logging in here there are no laws against it.

Theater has a disclaimer you must be over 18 to enter and since you meet those qualifications there's nothing illegal about it. I am not sure about Deviant Art however, but I am fairly certain that's fine as well.

Laptop or Desktop?

If laptop: Encrypt and upload the data that may be "sensitive" to a secure server, remove it from your computer, and reclaim it once you reach your destination.

If there happens to be illegal content on the device (loli material, pirated files, classified information, exc..), I would strongly advise uploading to a Tor server for maximum anonymity.

If Desktop: Remove the hard drive from the computer, and carry it with you in your carry-on bag. OR Encrypt the data, and mail the hard drive to the location you will be staying.

I would also like to note: The US government DOES NOT need probable cause to search electronic devices at the border. Not to say that they will, but if they do, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, and if they find something, you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

If you encrypted, or hid the data, but the Gov really wants to know what's on it, they are within their right to detain the device for an undisclosed amount of time. (usually 30 days) They are also able to send it to other agencies, if you tried to hide data by writing it in another language.

(all i did was read through Val's link for you)

The best method is to avoid bringing sensitive data with you, but if you absolutely must, the ways I mentioned above are just fine.

Thanks, everyone! No, don't have anything illegal by USA standards - just pics if people really tickling others and my erotic tickling stories. But I heard that the Canadian laws are much more strict about what they consider illegal.

I second this, and recommend Usenet.

Behind the wall in my room is a false panel. Inside that false panel is a thumb drive.

If you get searched, I want you to go to my room and get that drive... And eat it.

Eat it!?

... You're joking.

You heard right about the border laws. Canadians that came to a NASCAR race told me its a real pain. They even detained my boss for literally no reason. He said, "I was wearing my [business] jacket and they fucking detained me for hours! I seen them take a hippies drum, shake it, give the damn thing back, and sent him on his way!" Lol I mean.. I have no facts but be careful all the same.

Thanks for the advice!🙂

Probably overly late to help the OP, but I can pipe in for future references... I live half an hour from the Canadian border and have taken the trip multiple times. And we live near one of the main crossings...
It has gotten more strict in the last few months (I write this 4/2017), in regards to your reasons to go to Canada. Vacation, shopping, to see family or friends are all still valid reasons (for now, ha!). Anything you're concerned about, I'd take advice and hide, just in case. But you are very unlikely to be stopped as long as you just answer the questions and are unsuspicious and polite. Not a good thing for jokes! I once was with someone who decided joking about a gun was a good idea...yeah, we were detained, searched, and questioned for 3 hours! But that was the only bad experience I have had and I've probably crossed the border a couple dozen times.
