If you're a pro on dog behavior, I've got a question I'm trying to get an answer to:

Is there any sort of repellent substance (like mothballs or something) that will keep a dog from soiling on your yard?

Here's the deal: me and Mrs. D have a small patch of yard in front of our house, with a sidewalk and tree lawn. Most of the homes in the neighborhood have the same setup, except for the people who have landscaped their front yards.

Anyway, some local twit lately has been walking their dog on our street, allowing him to poop in our yard, and not picking up after it. It's gotten to the point where on an almost daily basis now we're seeing a fresh pile of dog manure on either the lawn, sidewalk or tree lawn. Evidently the dog, having sniffed the spot out, is going there repeatedly. Which would be fine IF the twit owner would pick up the poop like he's supposed to.

We don't know who the person is - he walks the dog when we're at work. Otherwise, it would be easy: I could politely say to the owner, "Listen, I'll make a deal with you; if you promise to start picking up after your dog, I'll promise to stop smashing my fist into your face like I've been doing for the past 15 minutes."

Is there any kind of stuff out there that will repel a dog? I know orange peel is supposed to work for cats, and apparently there's something called "Repel" that they sell at Home Depot, but I don't know whether it works or not.

This is a minor problem, but it's annoying. So any serious advice that anyone has to offer on how to solve this problem would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Yup...

The problem lies with the human. Videotape or ask a neighbor to do so. That's about the height of rudeness from a supposed "neighbor" D. Once you know who it is, I'd mail him a bill for your Waste Removal Time, and add a line regarding future price increases. Q

Hmmm..

I'm not sure. I heard repel works.

But I have a suggestion, you might not be able to stop the dog from shitting in your yard, might I suggest at least creating area where you know he'll shit, vice just shitting anywhere he chooses. If so, I'll suggest creating a model of my living room floor and placing it in the corner of your yard. I know my dog would go for it.

Interesting dilemma...I agree with Q. Don't blame the dog, blame the idiot owner. To my knowledge (and I do actually get asked this question a lot), there are no good "repellants" to keep unwanted canines away. I liked Q's suggestion of videotaping the guy, although it might be technically challenged during inclement weather and such. From a psychological standpoint, why not post a sign saying "Yard guarded by really BIG dog!" A tape recording of Cujo in the background might not be a bad investment...I know I wouldn't dawdle in a place where a slobbering beast might be lying in wait. Otherwise, handing out flyers on all the zoonotic diseases that are associated with dog feces and a quarrantine sign might scare off the guy, too. Good luck...and watch where you step!

On side note, they do make what they call "scat mats" - something you could hide under a pile of leaves say...they give off an electrical shock or emit a high pitched sound when stepped on...that might train the dog, but I don't know about the owner!

I did have a neighbour who used Pepper Spray and CS gas. Worked a treat for him. 😉
