So, I've occasionally been letting in a small, adorable cat(the landlords named her "Kit-Kat") to spend the night inside, and she seems really grateful. She's a sweet little thing, but by morning, my sinuses have gone pure apeshit and I'm sneezing continuously(like I have today ever since I've been up).

I'm just wondering if it's possible for one's histamines to ever "get used" to an allergen and stop being so persnickety.

Noooot likelly. Try Zyrtec, it saved me from pine and ragweed XD

With outdoor allergies, claritin, or some generic version, seems to work well. I have yet to find something that works for me in terms of indoor allergies. I'm real allergic to cats too.

Wahsing the cat might help as well. Atleast a little bit.

Make sure you vacuum religiously to get all the cat hair. Maybe keep the little critter out of your bedroom 24x7

yes,I was allergic to cats for the longest time.If that doesn't work you can get allergy shots or take some allergy medication.

I thought they were supposed to take care of that? Anyway, I burnt my tongue on some hot-off-the-grill sausage yesterday, and don't know if I'd be capable of washing her properly. :stickout

lol cats do groom themselves but some people choose to take them to the vet and get them groomed and their nails clipped just like a doggy

im allergic to cats.
take something for allergies and just see what happens.

or wash the cat.

I read somewhere that cat allergies stem from an enzyme in the cat's saliva, which is then spread to their fur when they're grooming themselves. However, you can buy cats that have been genetically modified to not have that enzyme.

I heard that too Annie.I think it's strange though since most of the time it the fur of an animal that the person is allergic to

Or perhaps it's the saliva-drenched fur they are allergic to and they just don't know it.

Ok, I'm a vet AND I have animal allergies (yeah, I'm a masochist...). The saliva in the protein is trigger for most - it dries and becomes the "dander" in the fur - which becomes airborne and even mroe plentiful after you pet the kitty. I react not only to the fur, but to being scratched as well (which gets saliva on it as they lick their paws to groom). There is talk about breeding allergy free cats... I'll believe it when I see it. Most people choose the hairless cats - the sphinx or the rex varieties - dander doesn't tend to stick to them.

If you can tolerate the "drowsiness" side effect - my favorite antihistamine (and the CHEAPEST) OTC is chlorpheniramine (chlortrimeton for some). Look for chlorpheniramine maleate 4mg strength - I take two tablets twice a day. Important: DO NOT take this with other sinus medication. This is why so many of the OTC drugs for colds are no longer available (OR they are behind the counter because they contain pseudephedrine which is a precursor for Meth).

Many thanks for the (from the trenches) reply, desdemona. I don't want to even try to comprehend what a typical day is for you, faced with a constant barrage of allergens with every new animal "client". Good ol' chlortrimetron® it is then! If that doesn't work, it's off with the schnoz!
