There have been a few threads lately about what kind of music everyone likes. My question is geared toward the older music lovers among us. Say, those over 30 or so, those raised on classic rock, or even older.

Are there any NEW bands or musicians that you listen to? Do any of these new artists do it for you, considering the stuff you grew up on?

If I had to pick a few (and there are only a FEW) new artists that I like...

Tori Amos (not really that new, but not in the classic category)

Rob Zombie

Alien Ant Farm

Live

Creed

Placebo

What about you other "old timers"?

Tried to

Dave I have tried listening to newer music I don't get it A lot of it is old music sung by a new artist Maybe I'm just to set in my ways

Well I'm many years past 30! LOL

I'm currently enjoying Enya and The Corrs quite a bit. Some of the new wave music is really cool too but I really don't even know the groups. I just know the songs I like.

The one disc that's fairly recent(in the last year, anyway) that I really enjoy is by Neco Case and her Boyfriends. It's alt-country, Lucinda Williams-sounding. -Drew.

I may not be in the target age group...but my question is this: What happened to Elvis Costello? He seems to have lost his edge..."Armed Forces" and "Spike" are fantastic albums though...

A good question; one that I enjoy answering ( :zzzzz: uh-oh... you got him started ). I swear by the 70's as the height of popular music and even experimentation within the mainstream. While I still tend to 'discover' as many things from the 70s as I do from today's scene, here is a short list of some good bands plugging away:

Stereolab- A band that incorporates 70s synthesizers and sounds with modern textures and pop music- what pop might be today without the commercial considerations (start with Dots and Loops)

Fugazi- A D.C. Hardcore band that has been around for a while and has displayed a lot of integrity. They have actually matured and gotten better with age, so I recommend their recent stuff (Red Medicine, End Hits )

Failure- A decent rock band who may not be together anymore. Magnified is a very good album.

Thinking Plague- Around in the 80s, but they reformed and released In Extremis. An excellent, complex art-rock band.

I don't like to be presumptuous with regard to taste. However, knowing that you are Rush, Dave2112, you might want to check out Voivod. They are a progressive metal band, also Canadian, from the 80s and 90s that employ a sci-fi concept. They are loud, but if you can listen to Rush, you can listen to them. Start with Nothing Face.

Hell, Dave, I still fondly remember seein' the Who tour in the 80s, but I've been into what's bein' called Modern Rock for ages. The span, for me, is wide. I know this only from record shoppin' (and only old guys call it that, when we know that it's CDs bein' bought). I hit most all the "rock" section, some of the Jazz section, movie soundtracks, and then sometimes the internation stuff, t'see if there's a decent Gamelan recording, some good Gaelic folksongs, or a reggae disc I want.

From the Who and Stones, forward to Radiohead. From there, t'Dave Matthews Band. Sisters of Mercy. Shriekback. Satchmo. Rage Against The Machine. Beck. Nine Inch Nails. Then back t'the Stones, for Sympathy for the Devil. Dramarama. UB40. Consolidated.

Nobody mooches a disc without freakin' on the collection in my office. I hide it these days. I'd rather tell 'em I'm into tickling...

Actually, Mica, I have NothingFace. Great album!

The only reason I didn't include Voivod was because they're really not that new, as you mentioned. I was turned on to them by Geddy Lee mentioning them in an article back in...oh, I think '87 or so. Something about the local crtics saying they "sound more like Rush than Rush does"!

Nice to see some ecclectic listeners!

Thanks.😎

not really an "old-school" fan but...

For the record...

Unfortunately, Mica, Failure is in fact no longer together...:cry1:

a fellow Voivod fan? sacre bleu!

Very cool, Dave2112. I guess it was presumptuous for me to throw out Voivod as if you didn't know them 😉 . I figured they'd be up your alley. Interesting that Geddy Lee should mention them in an article. I think Voivod kind of lost their identity when Denis Belanger (Snake) left the band, but what a great band they were!

:sadcry: Yeah, I kind of figured Failure had broken up, sushi854, considering the fact that their last album came out five years ago. It's cool to find fans of these bands on this forum, though! I love the tune "Moth," amongst others. Any ideas on the whereabouts of the members?

I remember seeing Voivods cover of Pink Floyds "Astronomy Dominion" on MTV back in the mid-90s grunge era -Drew

Old...and new

Creed is awesome, but a bit repetitous. Red Hot Chili Peppers, StainD, Alien Ant & Uncle Cracker make my list also...we counting Pearl Jam as old or new...lol? Q

"Astronomy Dominion" is on Mica's mentioned "NothingFace" album, and I highly recommend it as well.

And, Q? I guess I'd count Pearl Jam as new, considering the time era that those this post was directed at come from. As for myself, I have a love-hate relationship with Pearl Jam. I take them on a song-by-song basis. They HAVE had some wonderful tunes, and my band plays a few of the older ones.

'course, there IS somethin' funny, contextually, about referrin' t'Pearl Jam as "old"...

...now, Q, otoh...

...Kiddin', Q!

Diggin' the music threads,

the blue you once knew

Great tune "Astronomy Domine," eh Drew and Dave? Voivod were obviously (early) Pink Floyd fans as they also do a pretty straight ahead version of "The Nile Song" on their album The Outer Limits. I love that song.

Sorry, Dave2112. I think I'm the one responsible for your thread taking a u-turn.

:firedevil "She is calling from the deep. Summoning my soul to endless sleep..." :zzzzz:

Enya & Collective Soul. Rob Zombie's cool, and my son likes him too...I do NOT like Squirrel Jam, or the Really Silly Chili Peppers...Give'em away NOW! Fastball's good, and Greenday Rocks!

Rxx

Hey I'm not in this age group, but I saw someone talking about Fugazi. What can say about them? Great band. 13 songs is a great album. But hey, City Of Mica, you were the one that likes them right? Have you checked out Minor Threat? The lead singer of Fugazis' first band. Minor Threat rocks: true sXe Hardcore right there.

Mica, don't worry about the thread taking a U-turn, that's what conversation is all about. Lot's of threads start one way and end up another, that's the nature of communication. Keeps things interesting!😀

Astronomy Dominine!!! Syd Barrett!!! Yeah!!!!!

Even though I dj at a club, there's precious little music in the last 10 years that's got too much to recommend to it.....because the music business has gone all corporate! same thing with the movies! It's run by lawyers and accountants! Anyhow, I feel like Bjork and Beck have done some original work, the Beasties did some great stuff in the last 10 years, Portishead's first album I liked. Radiohead is good. It's funny because in the 80's everyone was grumbling how bad music had gotten (including me) and now looking back, it looks like the rennasaince!!!

Bands from the 80's I always loved: The Minutemen, Husker Du (up to Zen Arcade), Bongwater, Mission of Burma (City of Mica!!!!), Robyn Hitchcock (especially the Soft Boys), Elvis Costello (up to Spike! I agree with you Scooby Doo!), Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy (representing the hip hop!), Hugo Largo, XTC, and of course, all the bands I was in!(lol!)

hmmm...let's see

Creed

Third Eye Blind

Smashmouth

Blink182

Coors

That's about it right now...still love my "old school" bands!!!!

Thanx, Dave 2112. Atleast we're still talking music!

Yes, Daveisnotapunk, I know Minor Threat (I checked them out due to the Fugazi connection). More terrific D.C. hardcore- cool that you brought them up! Actually, Guy Picciotto, Fugazi’s other lead singer, along with Fugazi drumer Brendan Canty had a hardcore band prior to Fugazi called Rites of Spring. I don't know if you are familiar with them, but he’s a great singer and they were a very good band.

I think I was a grumbler to beat all grumblers :Grrr: when it came to the 80s music scene, nontkl. However, looking back, my opinion hasn't really changed about the mainstream music 80s scene (post '83 really). For my $, the interesting stuff came from bands with which I was unfamiliar at the time. Perhaps, the 90s were not entirely dissimilar; it may take a while to access and uncover some of the better music during the decade. I don't think the underground had as much to be angry about in the 90s as they did in the 80s.
