Hi. My computer screwed up, and I got a new motherboard put in, and had it formatted and yada. So now when I try to play videos, all the colors are inverted or something, and the movies aren't really watchable. The text is blurry, and can't make out the images the best. The audio is fine, though.

I downloaded DivX and XviD, and all that good stuff. Could it be my new motherboard that is making this happen, or can someone tell me any codecs or something I should download to fix the problem?

Thanks.

PS: I'd show a screenshot, but when I do Print Screen and try to make it into an image in paint, it doesn't show the picture.

Drago69: first thing to do is to use windows update and download all the updates related to windows media player 10 and directX 9.0c

Then you must download the mpeg codec and the divx codec (the xvid or 3ivx are useless because you need them only if you need to read the .omg files, i don't think that you ahve idea about what are the omg files, os don't worry 😀 )

in fact you didn't "formatted the motherboar" but the hard drive 🙂 so the only problem that you have is that the new windows miss the old codecs that you had on the computer before the fresh installation of windows, so you need before to update the windows media player to the version 10 (included all the WMV and wma codecs), and you also need to download the new directX 9.0c, without them is a little bit tricky to understand where is the problem 🙂

After that you updated windows and mediapplayer and directx you can begin to download the codecs (you already ahve divx, you need the mpeg and the indeo codecs too; those are the most common codecs used for internet videos.
If you prefer you can instaqll a codec pack like Nimo codec pack or Klite codec pack ( i suggest to avoid to do this....because many times the isnstallation of codecs that usually the user don't need is a cause of pain after), anyway try to do before what is suggested, then we can see if you need an additional program to find wich is the missed codec 🙂 I suggest Gspot; is a program that give to you the list of the codecs installed on your pc and also give to you info regarding wich codec is used by a clip.

Good luck!

This could also be a problem with outdated video or audio drivers. I recommend visitng Windows Update and checking for "Hardware Updates," which means newer drivers. My video players stopped working after I installed XP SP1 because of a non-compatible audio driver, which Windows Update correctly replaced.

Best of luck,

I'm not 100% sure about that "MPEG Codec" that you said. Could someone give me a link to download that?

Other than that, I have just downloaded DivX 9.0c, already had WMP10 (though I reinstalled anyway) and I believe I have all the WMV and WMA codecs, though I may be wrong, updated everything that I could at Windows Update, redownloaded DivX, downloaded Gspot to show me if I am missing any codecs (and I'm not). It's still doing the same thing. =\

I have picture of the Gspot where I was looking at a video I want to watch, and a picture of Windows Update showing I have nothing more to update - though maybe someone can tell me if I am missing something there.

Thanks for the help so far.

You can also go to download.com and pick up some codec packs they have avail

If there are no more hardware updates available, I'd get the Microsoft WMP Codec Pack here and maybe browse around http://www.free-codecs.com/ for a comprehensive pack like K-Lite. I use the Microsoft pack and have had no problems with it in WMP9.

Best of luck,

Ok, you updated DirectX 9.0c (and not divx 9.0c 😀) and wmp10 and the problem is still there ? (i suppose that you didn't downloaded all the updates
since you didn't told em that you updated all that was available on windows update) The problem is only with one video or with ALL teh videos? wich is teh extention of the file that you play?

I don't think is a problem related to hardware drivers, adn avoid to download teh drivers updates on the windows update 🙂 always use the site of the productor of your hardware (and if your hardware works well there is no need to update the drivers everytime that a new version come out, because maybe you cna have more problem updating 😀 usually the drivers update is only needed when they are obsolete (more than 6 months) or if some critical updates are available, otherwise use the drivers provided with teh cd (if is not so old of course lol ).

The symptom that Drago describesd is a codec problem, and not a hardware problem (is more than 15 years that i work with hardware, so i'm not talking only to talk 😉 ) ; the problem that you can't take screens is related to the setting of your video card; try to look in the advanced preferences of the display preferences tab if the directX accelleration is activated (also check on the dxdiag.exe in the windows/system32 drawer to see if the directdraw and the other directX components are ok).

The mpeg codec is useful only if you have problems with .mpg files, otherwise forget about it 😛

I hope that you didn't installed all the codecs that you found, because in this case is very easy that you will have the problem descripted by you (strange colours and video distorted); i had this problem when i installed the fourcc codecs and teh divx and the xvid.....in fact the computer didn't know wich codec was used by the .avi clips (since all the codecs are derivated from divx, the "header" thet the wmp use to identify the codec is the same); anyway hav eyou tried to use another player? like divx player or VLC player?

Anyway as i said is no use to download and install codecs if you don't have an exact idea of what you need 🙂 send the extention of the file and a list of all taht you have installed (excluded all teh stuff on windows update 😀) and maybe i can be more specific about what you shoiuld do 😀 in this conditions is impossible to know what kind of files is giving you problem without having all the info on the problem🙂

If you have a video card, go to the manufacturer's website to update the drivers. Windows update doesn't allways pick the right ones.
