to those of you that dont know, LONGTIME radio/TV announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers, Chick Hearn died August 5, 2002. Chick went to the hospital on August 2, after falling at his home. he had two brain surgeries, but then lapsed into a coma. needless to say, he didnt make it.
Chick was one of the all time great announcers. to those of you who heard him, he was that comforting voice. true, he loved the Lakers, but he ALWAYS gave credit to the opposing team, players and officials. he never hesitated to criticize the Lakers when they played badly. Chick was a true legend. he was there since 1961, and was the ONLY play by play announcer until he had to have heart surgery this past season and Paul Sunderland substituted for him. he had a streak of over 3300 games announced. he got to announce during the Elgin Baylor days to the West-Wilt era, the Magic-Kareem era, to the now Shaq-Kobe era. there will never be another like him.
my favorite quote he said was after Shaq finished off an alley-oop pass from Kobe during Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference finals against Portland. Chick said so eloquently, "Someone tell Portland to pack up the champagne and break out the bottled water. because that is all what they will be drinking on their way back home!" damn i love that quote....
so now the lights are off, the eggs are coolin' the butter's getting hard, and the jello's jigglin'..
R.I.P. Chick Hearn (1916-2002)
