Firstly, humans are the only animal capable of evil - malice of forethought, yet not unique in biological altruism.

Secondly... http://www.arktimes.com/ArkansasBlo...bulldogs-dead-from-fire-others-seriously-hurt

To say I was distraught when I heard about this is a bit of an understatement. My mum works at a bulldog rescue kennel and I've visited it a couple of times. They are very sweet creatures who have enough to put up with without arsonists.

As sad as I was that two perished, and as relieved as I was that most survived, my mind turned to retribution, and what new levels of pain I would subject the perpetrator to. I would make sure the fate suffered by the two dogs was 'wonderful' in comparison, so they might have died in ecstacy, relative to the hell their tormentor would suffer. They made the choice to inflict a grotesque amount of pain and suffering on blameless animals, and I would remind that person of the golden rule of philosophy, 'do as you would be done by'. I know that means I might suffer as well, but i'd tolerate that if I got to see that bastard scream for death.

"I know that means I might suffer as well" No man, you would be fine.

I think anyone who gives certain criminals what they actually deserve should get a medal.

Shit happens.
It does, but it's never that easily dismissed when it happens to you. Such fatalism isn't very useful in helping society overcome these sick events, it just gives people excuses to behave how they want with no considertion of how it affects others.

Humans are also the only animal intellectually capable of understanding the consequences of not wiping their ass after taking a shit, so I guess you take the good with the bad.

A quote from the song "Sophia" by the Cruxshadows:

The human animal is a beautiful and terrible creature, capable of limitless compassion and unfathomable cruelty. If you wish to find that which becomes the dividing line between mankind and other biological classifications, it rests not in brain size, dominance, or even emotional capability, but lies in the unique capacity for human beings to reflect on their actions and show regret--what is most certainly the ability to empathize. That gives them their position. All animals understand love and affection, but only man shows the propensity to place himself into the shoes of another lifeform. Losing this capability, among individuals of this species, reduces them below their much heralded position, and readies the climate for the likely fall of man...the fall from grace.

If this happened to me then sure, maybe I would care. But since it didn't I find myself struggling to give a damn.

I didn't follow the link. The thought of the things you hinted at being done to a living creature makes me a little queasy. Reading about it (or worse seeing it) in detail is something I can't handle right now...
Things like this are exactly why you are a deeply compassionate person. Caring this much about any living thing, even one you didn't know personally, makes you a sweet and truly empathetic human being (the exact opposite of a misanthrope though... 🙂 sorry, hun)
