Sing the song, to put yourself in the right frame of mind. Then click the link. Enjoy!

Left a good job in the city
Workin' for the man ev'ry night and day-
I never lost a minute of sleepin'
Thinkin' 'bout the way things might have been.

Big wheel keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin'.

Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Wow!

And I thought that a 25-foot starfighter blowing up a 750 million ton space station was unusual...😀

Actually, the captain of the Valdez wasn't even the one driving at the time! It was the third mate! Which makes you think...

...Gilligan was a first mate.😎

I just wish they had video of that. That was freakin' cool!! :yowzer: That has to be the luckiest captain in the whole world!

:wow: :yowzer: Now THAT was awesome!!

and yeah, the capt of the valdez was passed out from a drunken stoop below deck.
I have boycotted Exxon ever since.

Glad to be of service. Whole thing would be unbelievable if it hadn't been documented in photos. Must have been a hell of a ride!

More On Towboats

Thanks, Prime. I'm familiar with Warrior & Gulf Navigation, I've seen that boat (since repaired), and probably watched the coal being loaded onto those barges at Gorgas, Alabama on the Black Warrior River.

W & G captains were all experienced rivermen. The crews varied. Some captains got their crews from the Tuscaloosa and Marengo County jails. The sheriff would provide a list of guys sentenced for misdemeanors: pay a fine or do six months breaking rocks in the hot sun. Captain would pay the fine and the crewmen would work it off at minimum wage. They were mostly good old boys who liked to get drunk and duke it out, bust up the bar, break some windows, etc. There was no real harm in them. Some of them were regulars.

I can believe that the river was at record flood stage when the photos were made. Note the river gauge just downstream of the bridge. It is nearly submerged. At low water, the top was probably 15 ft above water level.
