I spend a lot of time waiting for private messages, because that's how I spend my time here, really.

I was derping about the forums and someone told me that tickling yourself isn't possible. I didn't get it, because I can tickle myself just fine. Nobody around me does, but I just figured it was because they hated being tickled, or maybe I was too ticklish.

I haven't been diagnosed with anything, so how could this be possible?

I guess it's possible to produce a tickle-like feeling, but to actually cause yourself to laugh out loud from tickling yourself is impossible. You need the element of surprise that is definitely not there unless you're a schizophrenic.

It's a common claim in the tickle community, though, since being hypersensitive is considered attractive to most lers.

Not sure. The reason people can't tickle themselves is because tickling involves surprise and not being able to know where the sensations are coming from. Your brain knows where your fingers will go before they do, so tickling yourself isn't really possible. No idea how you can manage it.

I mean, I cant force myself into hysterics, but I can keep tickling myself up to laughing. Maybe it has something to do with focus or attention? I can ignore parts of my body and still move them. Could I have schizophrenia?

I mean I don't know how else to react to someone claiming they can do the impossible.

^^" sorry about that, I was just a little frustrated. I don't know why. I really wanna know why because I'm worried something may be wrong with me.

Maybe I took too many blows to the head as a kid.

No, you're obviously not schizophrenic. That's kind of hard to miss.

As long as tickling yourself gets a different reaction than someone else tickling you, it's "normal"... you just sound particularly sensitive.

I don't see or hear things that aren't there, but I've had ADHD as a kid, and growing up the hyperactivity faded, but the lack of attention stayed, which is why I asked if it was a focus thing.

lol i feel like there was a study that was similar to that, but when the subjects knew it was coming, they did not react. When they didn't know when it was coming, they did.

I wanna know who got so desperate for tickles they started taping feathers to their fan lol like went to the craft shop and everything haha

Pretty sure I can one-up that: there's a fellow I know on DA who built a tickle machine out of K'Nex. Like, full on designed this little rotating fan thing and stuck feathers in it. XD

I'm not going to say you can't tickle yourself...

I think that it's possible to do so, although I do understand why some people don't... most people can't.. but I think you can if you're ticklish enough. I don't know that anyone can tickle themself better than another person can tickle them though... if you start laughing or it starts really tickling you're going to stop, so it's not like you can keep tickling yourself. I think you'd stop right as soon as it started to tickle.

Maybe anyone claiming they can tickle them self should take a video and upload it. 😉

So I guess scientists and medical experts have been wrong this whole time lol

^^; if it tickles, I can't keep going on my own. I was saying I can start the feeling by just not paying attention to myself, but when it starts to tickle, I cant keep going. The whole not being able to pay attention thing is why I think it's a focus related thing.

I feel like I need to be in a mental institute or something now.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That reminded me of this classic bit from Seinfeld :lol

How about if you looked into a mirror while you tickled yourself? It might be good enough to throw off your brain... try that.

Isn't there a thing where you twist your arms around each other, fold your hands and someone points to one of you fingers, and you try to lift it and you often raise the wrong one? I find if I get into a twisted or crossed position and poke myself with all fingers very quickly, it does tickle enough to start to laugh, but it only lasts for two or three seconds. So, maybe you can't tickle yourself as long as you clearly realize where you are tickling. That's kind of a focus thing, I guess.

I tried the feathers and fan thing... the blast of air corrupted the experience. I think that the concept is on the right track though.

How about some kind of water octopus kind of thing, you know that you'd hook up to a garden hose? But instead of water, you would use air. it would have to smaller of course.

Something like that maybe?

Self-tickling using a tickling machine may be cheating somehow, but that's a really interesting idea. I really like that. Using an air powered tickle machine solves a lot of problems of safety. "Soft robotics" I think is the term. Gets hits on youtube searches anyway. I'm really going to think about that. (I'm an über geek engineer, so tickle tech is way too exciting.)

For a less practical machine, how about a "mecha raspberry"? Imagine several air hoses with big red rubber lips of various sizes, strapped to the victim, or oneself, I guess. The control system is like an organ keyboard, with each key controlling a different hose and making a different raspberry pitch, not to mention the victim's vocal accompaniment. Now play the Blue Danube Waltz. That's a scene ridiculous enough to laugh at, even if it doesn't tickle.

What counts as tickling yourself? Because if I tickle my own feet, then after a few seconds I have to stop because it becomes unbearable. I don't burst out laughing (probably because I stop quite soon!), but the sensation is the same. Do you have to laugh for it to be tickling?

I think scientists already solved this conundrum. No element of surprise when you tickle yourself, so the response is not the same. But this is not as sexy to our community as being so sensitive, touching your own body is a challenge lol
