Senseless death

Tonight, my sister's dog died by electrocution. She's terrified of storms and fireworks (although her thundershirt and meds help her anxiety a lot). While my sister and her husband were out, they confined their two dogs to the kitchen. The little one managed to get into the cabinet underneath the sink and bit through the cord to the dishwasher. They couldn't find her at first when they got home. My brother in law got shocked when he tried to get the cord out of her mouth - so he quickly figured out what had happened. I hate this time of year and people who set of fireworks. I have to prescribe so many tranquilizers to keep dogs and cats from going ballistic or running off due to fear. No one should have to face such a loss due to stupidity. Life is fragile and time is fleeting. Carpe diem.... and RIP Mattie.

I'm very sorry for your sister's little doggie. Tragic.

Very sad, whether a doggie or a kittie... (and if it's not yours, you don't know the pain). I do wonder about the sanity of many that set off their own fireworks.....although they are fun, do they really know what they are doing?

Unfortunately many animals run away due to the loud fireworks.

That's really Sad, I'm so sorry for your Loss.

My Family has a little dog that gets scared very easily, thunderstorms scare him a lot, and he also takes Meds. People in our Neighborhood shoot off Fireworks also.

We're going into DC to see those Fireworks, and we're taking him with us. At first we weren't gonna take him, mainly because where we're going, people usually bring Big Dogs and they're not always on Leashes (eventhough they're supposed to be). But with him being scared so easily, we couldn't leave him in a Dark House alone with the neighbors shooting Fireworks off. They go hard on The 4th of July. And since this 4th of July is on a Friday, they'll likely be shooting them off late into the night. They go much later if the 4th is on a Friday or Saturday.

Last year we had someone shooting off fireworks around 3 in the Morning, and it wasn't even on the 4th. It was just Random.

Yes he may get scared while in DC, but we'll be there for him. And he does better when we're with him.

Again I'm sorry that this happened, and my prayers go out to your family during this difficult time.

That is very, very sad. 🙁 🙁
I am sorry for your sister's loss.

Tonight, my sister's dog died by electrocution . . . . RIP Mattie.

From one animal person to another, very, very sorry to hear about Mattie and how she died.

My state, along with desdemona's Ohio, is one of the few that have bans on consumer fireworks, but that certainly doesn't stop a lot of the crazies here either. Indeed, drive along a lot of our highways and interstates and soon enough you'll encounter big, flashy billboards advertising the easy availability of fireworks in neighboring states like Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, alcohol aids in fueling a lot of the insanity that traditionally besets this holiday. Incredible; Demon Rum and fireworks, what a deadly combination if not for the fire risk alone not to mention the potential harm to pets, and to the many combat veterans we now have also.

And get a load of these jewels of mixed-signal advice from medical professionals in my area about the seemingly obvious personal injury threats of fireworks, which I stress again are still illegal here:

  • "Don't hold [fireworks] in your hands. Try to light them and walk away from them. I'm not advocating that people use fireworks. I know that you're going to anyway, so as a physician, I'll tell you if you're going to use fireworks anyway try to use it them in a safe fashion, not holding them, not throwing them at people"
  • "We do see a lot of firework injuries with people coming in with fingers blown off and maybe some eat [sic, typo for "ear"] injuries from the sound"

I'm sorry to hear the sad news, Des. Freakin' people and their stupid-ass, moronic fireworks.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I love Dogs and I think people could learn a thing or two about love and loyalty from our canine friends.

Now I must admit I do enjoy a good fireworks display, but I could also never understand why people want to set off their own bottle rockets, roman candles, etc. in their backyards or driveways. Not only is it dangerous, it's also traumatic for housepets(as we've seen in this story).

Plus those "roadstand" fireworks aren't even that impressive to begin with. A few sparks, a couple loud pops and that's it. Not even worthy of an "ooh" or an "ahh"
You want to see quality fireworks check out the public displays. They're safe, 10X better than the crap you'd buy in a store, and you won't freak out your neighbors pets.

So sorry to hear about this,........... as you know I have a big ol' beast of my own, and he's the same with the sounds of thunder or fireworks (a weekly thing in this town) My sincere condolences for the loss.

Um...

Sorry for your loss. Animals do NOT NEED medication.

They need proper training and a comfort zone to calll their own.

You have my condolences. Poor dog.

I had to put up with flaming assholes in my neighborhood popping off what sounded like howitzer shells into the wee hours this past 4th of July weekend. All weekend long. Fireworks ought to be restricted, the way prescription drugs are. That is, only pros who know what they're doing should have access to them.

Very sorry to hear of your sister's loss. Pets are such an important part of our lives, and their passing, under any circumstances, is so very painful. All of my best wishes to her, and you.

I'm so so sorry Des, those are things that should never happen, expecially to our loved dogs and cats friends. I have a dog and know how much they love us and what it means to be loved by them... when fireworks explode (just over my house; once they almost set my house on fire) i have to close all the windows and stay there with my dog, untill it's over, and i see the fear in in his eyes.
Best wishes to you and your sister. And R.I.P. to the poor dog.

I'm so sorry to hear about that, a loved one dying caused only by illegitimate fireworks is just wrong and senseless as you said. My dog gets really scared during thunderstorms as well and only calms down when near us. I can only imagine what it would be like to lose him due to something so inane.
You mentioned that you hate the people who set off the fireworks as well as this time of year. I know its not my place to preach to you during your family's time of grief but hating the ignorant and apathetic is like banging your head against the wall; it won't do anything, much less fix anything and will only make grieving worse and keep the pain around longer than it should.
It's just a part of the human experience that I've seen often and know well.
Again, my condolences to you and yours. 🙁 :console:

Thank you all for your kind words and support. Hate is a strong word and I don't usually toss it around casually. I don't harbor ill feelings towards such ignorant celebrators, but I will never understand or appreciate the need for pyrotechnics by the inexperienced or drunken fools who need noise and bright lights to enjoy themselves.

des, I was away when you posted this tragic news, and today is the first I'm seeing it. I am so very sorry for the passing of Mattie. May she R. I. P.

I this thread a joke?

Are we honestly blaiming this animal's death on somebody else aside from the primary caregivers?

You said you were a fully qualified Veteranarian, right?
