ok so last night i was channel surfing sort of..and see VH1 counting down the "all time best hard rock songs" and i'm either agreeing or disagreeing, talking to the tv..which hubby abhorrs btw..but he was watching some stupid bowl in the other room so i told him to buzz off...anyway..in the top fifty or so... "She's my cherry pie?????" by Warrant..granted a knockout blonde is featured in the video but..."She's my cherry pie?????" i kept droning out over and over long after old Bret what's his name was counting down further..

i mean hello this is a hard rock song?? just cuz Warrant had long hair??? i mean gesh...to me this was bubble gum music..i mean sure i liked the video..and damn Bobbie Brown was drop dead gorgeous and what a body but that does not a hard rock song make..i'm so sure Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" or "Space Truckin" didn't make the list...i quit watching..i went to bed still shaking my head and repeating "She's my cherry pie????" in disbelief..

Even Jani Lane wasn't a huge fan of the song after he wrote it. The reason it was really written is that the labell was after the band to put some kind of hit single on the CD. The band was a bit annoyed when the record label pushed that single so hard that they changed the name of the CD from 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' to 'Cherry Pie'. Don't go by what Jani said in the VH1 countdown - in other interviews he was a bit embarrassed by the song.

And it's Bret Michaels (Poison). I saw them live two years ago and they just rocked the house.

BTW, I like Deep Purple, too .. but it's a different period for hard rock. Back then we had 10 minute guitar solo's and more songs were blues based minor keys. Not so much anymore. It's not a positive or a negative ... it's just that music is constantly changing. Back in the 70's who would have thought a band like Red Hot Chili Peppers would have been successful. Now everyone loves them.

Yeah - I would call bands like Jovi, Warrant, and Poison 'Pop Hard Rock'. I don't use the term disparagingly ... I'm just pointing out the differences between the more serious sounding (Serious? Can you really say that about a song about a van? <Highway Star>) hard rock of the seventies and the more hook laden hard rock of the 80's and 90's.

ah well Iggy Pop made the count down..from his early days..and so did Ted (ack gag me with a spoon) Nugent..as did the Kink's 1964 "You've really got me" which was a nice thing..hmm i wonder if "House of the Rising Sun" by my all time favorite Animals made it..i used to have such a crush on Eric..mmm speaking of crushes i had a huge one on the lead singer for Faith No More..whose "Epic" made the countdown..their rendition of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" helped make me a Sabbath fan..

ooo and yes you can definitely compare Deep Purple to Warrant..no matter what the song..those guys always sounded hard rock...some hair bands that i did consider hard rock..Cinderella..and the band that did "Balls to the Walls" hehe

Tesla does a great cover of War Pigs. Saw them last year... they're still a great band. Frank is just awesome when noodling around in a classical style

warrant in there prime was a good hard rock/hair band group. the hollywood brother liked the song cherry pie and the video was a fun video. the hollywood brother do not know if it ranks up there with twisted sister or quiet riot but the hollywood brother thinks it at least deserves honorable mention

Warrant actually hated that song. As David pointed out, the label made them record that song. I saw an interview with the band recently and they said they actually conspired to play the song badly, which they did. The "bad" version ended up sounding better than the song was intended to sound so they went with that version. The band also emphatically stated they would never play that song again at any concert or venue. I myself am more into Bon Jovi, ACDC, and Aerosmith.

I know, funny isn't it? The song that made them the most money and boosted their fame is the one they hate most. Meh rock bands, what can you say.
