Hey! I was wondering if anybody utilizes this web-based phone service and/or could tell me abit about it.

I currently have a prepaid phone which gets pretty expensive for long calls, and I'm told that Skype is a good way to go for calling from home, utilizing your computer.

I'm unsure on some of the finer points, though. Does the person on the other end need to also use Skype? I'm aware that I can't make emergency calls, but that's not a big issue.

So, if anybody can gimme the skinny on Skype(good news OR bad), I'm all ears!

Thanks,

Rick T. 😛aw:

I love skype so much. If you're making pc to pc phone calls it's completely free, but if you want to call landlines it will cost you. I think they sell packages of minutes, but it's much less expensive than going just the regular route. Make sure you have a decent connection/microphone though. The other peson, by the way, doesn't need skype. They can have just a regular phone or a cell phone. As for the emergency numbers, I think it's just a different number you have to dial. I think they have an faq on their website about it. Beyond that, yeah, I'd definitely recommend a download. Test it out by calling another computer, and if you like it just buy some minutes. There's no additional download or anything 🙂

I've used Skype. Its an excellent service. If you have a decent Broadband connection then you should have no problem using it.

Skype rocks! You can call someone in Europe for the same price as someone in any part of North America - about US 2 cents a minute! The catch - you have to use your computer and a headset costing about 20 bucks or so (I use a headset/mic which I got cheap from a computer store. Works OK!). You can also buy Skype-ready phones, though that runs into money. They even have versions of Skype for certain flavors of Linux. That's impressive!

Aye... the wonders of VoIP. Had my friends only used Skype, I would have saved a lot of money.

Ah,well...

If you really wish a lower phone bill, I'd recommend Skype. Even some messengers (Yahoo and MSN) have pc-to-pc calls (yahoo has pc-to-phone).

Ah, bless you guys! I am as good as there on it after listening to your endorsments(and that of another Net-bud. Tanka-Anka! :super_hap

How about Skype with live streaming high def

I got a friend working along the DMZ on a secure com link for North Korea, and in Feburary the soft ware will be available to d/l free for three users, resgistration is manditory and a lgoitec high def camera to send. from the bried demo i saw it was too good to be true. I am going back wednesday to get the full version. A place over LAX, lots of potential for live streaming high def.

I tried it several years ago, like 4 . Worked fine ! i chatted with people from Canada without any problems, it was cool 🙂 and it's free. Some say there can be viruses with skype, but come on already going on the net there "can" be a risk so don't think about it and use.

skype = cool
