So my husband will be tested in April for sleep apnea..i googled it online and found that it's much more dangerous than i realized..that each time you are jolted awake, which is many times during the night..sometimes you are aware of it, sometimes not..that those times you are in fact saving your life..does anyone here have this? Any answers would be much appreciated..

Yup. I got it. I'm alway's tired. I usualy wake up every 45-60 min. Good luck to your hubby

I have chronic insomnia, which is obviously different from sleep apnea, but I was tested for it a couple of years ago. My doctor was convinced that I had apnea and not insomnia, so I had to see a pumonary/sleep specialist and go through a sleep lab study to see what the problem was.

Turns out that I do have some breathing irregularities when I do sleep, but I don't actually stop breathing. I know that a lot of times the person actually stops breathing completely, and that's what wakes them up. Usually they don't remember it and they are tired all the time and don't know why.

Although I don't use it much, my doctor assigned me a C-PAT machine to assist with my breathing when I sleep. It's a mask that is attached with hoses to a machine that has a water reservoir for moisture, and the machine will pump moist air through the mask, and will keep airways open so the person won't stop breathing.

If your husband is found to have apnea, he will probably get one of those machines. I should use it more than I do, but I have enough problems trying to sleep as it is, and I have a harder time falling asleep with the mask on, as I tend to sleep on my stomach. I don't know if that's any help to you or not, but that's about the extent of what I know about it. I have some friends and co-workers that have sleep apnea, and I know it's no fun. The good news is it's something they can treat, so good luck to you and your husband. I hope they get him feeling better if he's having issues.

Is your husband overweight? My wife used to tell me I had it. I lost 10 pounds and it went away.

I've lost about 40 pounds over the last 8 months. I'm actually below the weight I was several years back when I had a sleep study done which confirmed that my apnea was no longer. So I tried going without the mask and hose and stuff. So far so good! (I do however, have other sleep-related issues kicking my butt all over the yard, as I've pointed out elsewhere 😛issed).

Anyone here who does have sleep apnea and has to use a CPAP or BIPAP, all I can say is hang in there. I've been there and done that, so I think I know what you must be going through.

I'm a bad snorer with nasty sinus problems (something my wife and I share). Overweight also. Should I be more aware of sleep apnea?

Yes he's overweight...thanks guys...he is on a diet and hopes to cure it that way..

Dumping sugar and hyper-processed junk food will go a long way toward normalizing one's weight (take THAT, Mickey-D's!)

The C-PAT machine is something he might need to use. My uncle has sleep apnea and has been through a lot with it. Losing weight is also a BIG factor, and for many reasons regarding his health.

Best of luck!

Thanks Dave...my husband is a diabetic so that doesn't help at all..he has been dieting and he believes he will try that for a bit instead of getting tested..the thing about the machine, my brother in law has one..and his cat constantly got tangled in the wires or whatever..and chelsea loves to sleep with us so hmm

I threatened (jokingly) my wife that if I could get down or close to my high school weight (115), I'll be in good shape. I would just like to drop down to maybe 130.
I walk around 5 miles or more a day. We eat less red meat, more vegs and fruit. I try to stay away from sodas, but I love coffee (no cream or sugar).

Any ideas other than seeing my doctor?

maybe going to a gym and working out or swimming

I'm glad that I saw this.

^It can be dangerous, I have a cousin who fell asleep behind the wheel of her car. I told her that she probably had Sleep Apnea, before she got tested.
Anyway she now has her driving restricted to an area close to home, and she was given an oxygen mask to use at night.^

I'd like to respectfully recommend that your husband get tested. Losing excess weight is a good thing no matter what (and can be very hard to get behind and do, even when your quality of life clearly depends on it - been there, done it that way!). Untreated asleep apnea can make weight loss more difficult, and raise other kinds of hell.

FWIW, cat-entanglement has not been an issue when I've used my bi-pap at the homes of people who own kitties.
