Never thought this day would come, but I'm thinking about taking the plunge and have no idea where to start. What platform (I think that's the right term) do you like, and why? What about online security? I need an education here, all advise and opinions are welcome.

I use an Android and I like it. Mine is a Samsung Galaxy III. The Galaxy IV is out but I'm not really up on what improvements it offers.

You can get a Galaxy III at Costco for about $39 if you buy a 2-year contract with AT&T or Verizon. You can have multiple email accounts, holds about 4 GB of music, photos, etc. The camera takes great pictures. It does voice-to-text translation, meaning you can speak into it and it will take dictation, so to speak. It's very handy when texting people. The screen is larger than an iPhone 5. It's flatter than an iPhone and it fits very nicely in the front pocket. If you make certain to dedicate one front pocket to the phone and nothing else, it'll keep the surface from getting scratched.

My only criticism is a mild one. Because it's so thin it's sometimes difficult to hold in one hand without touching the edge of the touch screen. As for security, you can configure the device with a passcode to use it, but even if it's locked there is still a dial pad that will allow you to make emergency calls only, like 911. Also you don't have to enter the passcode to answer an incoming call.

iPhones are very popular, however I've never owned an i-anything. I'll let the others speak of them. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks, I'll look into that phone.

The iPhone 4 was my first smart phone and I loved it! I recently broke the screen though and jumped ship to the Galaxy s4. I like it so far. Much larger screen, and far more customizable than the apple products. The 13mp camera can't be beat. Apple is coming out with their response to the s4 in the upcoming days, I'd wait and see what those phones were like before committing to one.

I love android phones .. i tend to go with the larger screen because its easier to use with these big fingers ... As for security there are apps you can get but i dont know much about them...If your new to them it takes getting used to so dont go tossing it out a window when you get one 😛

I have an iPhone 4 and I really do like it. Once you get used to the touch-screen, especially while sending text messages, it's user-friendly. However, the battery life on an iPhone is really sketchy. I've used all the tricks to try and keep the battery going for as long as I can, and I do charge the battery more often than on other phones I've owned, so that would be something to think about. I'd agree with GQGuy above: Have a look around before you choose one!

I have an IPhone 3G. it's pretty good, but., as Aphion mentioned, the battery life on the Iphones really isn't great. It seems like I'm always needing to charge my phone when I'm home, and when I'm out, it runs out of juice quickly. I like the phone itself, though, and the features.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'm not rushing into anything, not like I just have to have a phone tomorrow. I plan on shopping around.

The battery life of the s-4 is pretty bad. But! I have two spare batteries I keep charged at all times. Costed me 20 bucks and it included a charger. I just swap out bettered whenever my phone runs low. An option that the iPhone doesn't give you. I laugh at my apple friends as I go from 2% to 100% in a matter of seconds.

What happened to the good old days of rotary dial phones, and the milkman came to your door, and we put baseball cards in spokes of our banana seat bicycles???!!!

Frankly, I miss the days of the old Nokia 3310. You could create your own ringtones!. I mean, how cool and awesome is that? 😀

It's totally awesome. But I still make my own ring tones. I create small mp3 files, using recording software and keyboards. Or I might use sound editing software to surgically extract a guitar solo or perhaps all the clocks ringing from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Just about any smartphone will accept mp3 files for ring tones.

always a good idea

You got old 😛

If you're not on Verizon or Sprint, look into getting a Nexus 4 (or wait for the Nexus 5) from the Google Play store. Instead of waiting 6 months for the manufacturer and carrier to donk around with pushing the newest Android update you'll get them immediately as Google releases them. Stock Android is also very nice (I'm not a huge fan of the tacked-on UI's that the manufacturers include on their phones).

Thanks Spiffy. 🙂
