OK, this is driving me nuts... I found my old spray deodorant and I can smell it all through the house. It's the deodorant I took to South Africa with me, and I bought it just before I went up the coast to spend a week with my (now ex) girlfriend so now every time I take a breath I'm constantly reminded of old experiences.

It's nice, but also slowly driving me insane. Which smells remind you of experiences?

Haha, Biggles, you truly made me laugh with this one!!

:blaugh: Mwahhahahahhahaha!! (only evil sometimes)

Smells, eh? There's a certain smell that reminds of my childhood, and another that reminds me of Pakistan, but I don't go into those parts of town anymore.

Khuda Hafiz (Cheers in Urdu).

hmmm the smell of anise reminds me of Christmas, vanilla is just a comfort aroma for me, raspberries remind me of summer...chamomile reminds me of my late grandmother's house

I know exactly what you mean, Biggles! Opium (the perfume!) is a powerful reminder of a past lover -- a relationship that was intense, short-lived and long-lamented.
Love stinks, yeah yeah
Love stinks, yeah yeah

• Gasoline fumes at gas stations... all the great road trips I took with my family as a child. We'd always buy gas before setting out, when I was feeling most excited about traveling.
• Autumn scents... damp leaves, crisp air... flashbacks, like mental snapshots, of wonderful family reunions. Our family circle met annually in October at a mountain resort for 30 years.
• Good pipe tobacco... my uncle.
• Roasting chicken... waiting impatiently for dinner while my mom cooked the same savory dish every Friday night in winter. Worth the wait!
...and many more

Heck, I've MOVED to avoid smells that remind me of bad things. It's one of the most primitive senses, after all. It's rather dominant that way.

Haven't you ever noticed that your lover's scent, in general, eventually grows to be specific to them? I've had times when I could SMELL someone havin' been recently around.

Makes me glad I have allergies, sometimes. Can't smell so well when they're actin' up!

Actually, they say that the sense of smell is the strongest memory trigger there is...for both good and bad memories.

During hunting season, even the faint scent of deer blood drifting off the hill reminds me of when a deer jumped through our classroom window when I was in grade school.

The smell of cabbage and onions reminds me of my grandmother's cooking (fraternal...the maternal one can't cook to save her life).

A certain men's cologne (don't even know which it is) always takes me back to a highschool teacher who loved to tickle.

***breaking into song*** Thanks for the memories....

Ann

Vanilla reminds me of Christmas and some special times with a special guy.

Burnt Brake Fluid, tire rubber or oil - The best.... Time at the race track. (Yes, I know it sounds wierd but every time a car or motorcycle goes by burning motor oil I get the most wonderful flashes of fun times flying through my mind)

Sawdust - Building the rack last New Years Eve!

Apples - The Crepe Suzette at Midnight last New Years Eve!

Barbeque anything - Camping at the Racetrack with my family and friends.

Candles - any scent - Fun at our gatherings at my house.

And fresh mown grass - Wrestling on the lawn with the doggies and my nieces and nephews.

But the best ever - Redwood Trees - Vacation time with my family up at the river in the cabin! There's nothing like the smell of a redwood tree early in the morning with the sun breaking through the strong branches, the fresh air, birds singing, and enjoying a cup of coffee on the patio at the cabin.

I have many perfumes that remind me of old girlfriends.

It always leaves a low feeling in my stomach when I smell them.

The smell of fresh bread will now forever be associated with my new job at a bakery and all the cuties who work there with me 😀

Wasn't it Proust, in his Remembrance of Things Stinky, who spoke of sniffing a wheel of Brie and being emotionally transported to his childhood on a farm in the south of France (really weird, since he grew up in Paris)?

It wasn't??

Then what the hell was I reading????

Al Bundy's autobiography. :blaugh:

"Aawwww, Peg!!"

Cheers. 😀

Good topic!

When I was a kid, we didn't have AC in the house so we used the fan mounted in the attic to pull outside air through the house. On hot summer nights, you could smell summertime coming across you as you lay in bed in front of the windows. The smell of clover and wisteria.
I have air freshener scented of wisteria now just for that reason!

The smell of freshly brewed tea reminds me of conversations with a good friend. He is forever "brewing."

Then there is the smell of coffee, gumbo, and cigarettes that brings back thoughts of my grandfathers house on Saturday afternoons.

My favorite scent to trigger a thought? It centers around being out on the family boat. It was a nice size creature of about 60 feet that was rigged for fishing and shrimping. I spent more time on that boat than I did on land when I was a kid and that is no exaggeration. The smell is a combination of the exhaust from the deisel and the murk of the gulf water when close to shore. The coast line here is protected from too much strong wave action by a line of barrier islands. That means the sea bottom is fairly undisturbed. Whenever something churns the bottom, a sweet smell surfaces. It's muddy with the smell of seagrass and fish. Some people say the swamps of Parris Island (Where Marine bootcamp is) smells alot like this. Twilight...moist air...the wind blowing your hair up off of your shoulders...the smell of the water...the dolphins blowing as they ride the crest where the boat breaks the water....that is perfection in a moment. Reminders of it come to me at moments when I least expect it. It's like a little gift.

oops...got a bit longwinded...sorry.
Thanks for that memory. 🙂

The smell of the beach reminds of freedom and the release of all worries.

"That reminds me of smelling weed."

"That reminds me of smelling a pussy."

"That reminds me of smelling an ass."

"Yeah, that reminds me of smelling a sixty year old guys ass."

The car halts. And they throw the last guy out of the car.

A few minutes later a cow walks into the road causing the car to crash, killing the last guy...

The moral of the story: If any of your friends have fooled around with a sixty year old guy, do not throw them out of your car, or you will die.

remembering smells...

ok, you are probably going to think that I am weird🙄 , but because I am into D/s, I like the smell of leather. Yes, I said "leather" because it reminds me of the wonderful floggings that I get and it relaxes me oh so much:zzzzz: . Almost to the point that I could sleep. lol. Then there is the smell of rain that I so luv to sniff because it reminds me of my childhood memories of "dancing in the rain" in my barefeet with my best friend. And then there is Autumn that I just cannot wait to come around because I like the smell of burning leaves. It puts my brain into overdrive knowing that I have to put up decorations and buy all this Halloween candy and Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas (shopping starts in October for me). 😀 And then there is that flame that I so wanted and couldn't have that always wore Drakkar. Just the smell of that cologne gets me, uhm well, you know.🙄 Great subject for discussion, you've got me thinking and remembering.

Ah yes! a good topic indeed..........

....the pungent, acrid, sulphorus stench of "Leys Castings"Factory as it used to drift across
the old Base Ball Ground,in my home town of Derby,as I would watch my beloved Rams beating the best football teams Europe had to offer, what a distant memory that is but it always comes back to me when i smell a freshly lighted match.

Red, you *did NOT* mean to set me up wit' a joke about what I think of when I smell a match burning, or anything sulphurous! 😉

ticklemebreezy, you probably got ALL of us more kinked ticklephiles grinnin' when you mentioned the scent of leather. And RAIN! Wrote a tune, way back in college, with a line in it about "the rise of the smell of the wet cement, that the rain rises up from the sidewalk." Fine memories there, too!

This *is* a fine thread.

Hey Joby!

Me too! We vacationed at a lake resort in Canada when I was a kid. The smells of oil and gasoline and two-cycle engine exhaust, lake water, disturbed lake bottom, bug dope, a whiff of swamp vegetation... all of that takes me back to fishing with my grandfather at the lodge. Thanks for reminding me!

Love ya!
