Smoking unhealthy for computers, too?

Yesterday, I lost my whole computer in a guge crash: it short-circuited and destroyed motherboard and processor. Part of my data from the hard drive was lost, too.

The problem: Because I'm a heavy pipe-smoker, the ventilator had become sticky, finally stuck, and it overheated.

Just for the info of all my friends whom I'm in contact with: I'm currently unable to access the internet or my emails, only from an internet cafe. I'll post here again as soon the problem's fixed.

Yikes I never thought of smoke affecting the computer. I'm a pipe smoker as well, so it's good to be warned that there is a potential problem there. I just got my computer last winter and it's my baby, I'll be blowing my smoke in the other direction from now on. Thanks for letting us know.

I don't smoke indoors at home out of consideration for non-smoking family members, so I don't have this problem. But I remember back in the Stone Age, when my then-employer started buying PC-AT machines, we were cautioned about smoking while using them for just that reason. Good advice, Hal.

You really should, every once in a while, open up that case and make sure the fans are turning freely, and the vents aren't clogged.

Make sure you unplug the damn thing first, then just give the fans a little push. If they immediately stop or slow down very quickly, it's time to replace it. They aren't that expensive though.

Also, take a can a compressed air and blow the vents clear. Use short bursts of air, because water builds up on the end of the little straw if you hold the button down too long. If you want to see something really cool though, hold the can upside down and spray it (not in the computer). A big white cloud comes shooting out.
