AHEM...Amazing Spiderman 2.
Personally, I've heard a lot of bad shit about it so far, but I don't think it is as bad as all that. Was it TWS? No. Was it a decent cape flick? I'd say so, sorta. Depends on how you look at it.
I still say Garfield is better than Maquire. He can pull off the 'wisecracking smartass' Spiderman that McGuire never really did, and still convey proper emotions which have a range to them. This is compared to McGuire who generally had one primary emotion (sadface) which slightly changed.
Also prefer Stone to Dunst, though granted they are two different characters. Still, as far as "the love interest' goes, Garfield and Stone definitely have more chemistry, on top of being more interesting as characters. Which is sorta good, since the movie spends A LOT of time focusing on their relationship. A lot. Maybe too much, but I get why. Yeah, it has a lot of drama and such, but then they are still teenagers. That's what teenagers do. Hell, we're probably lucky it was as tame as it was.
Other parts: the villains were pretty hammy, but not so much to not be enjoyable, depending on how you feel about ham. Foxx as Electro...I think he pulled it off, which I was skeptical of. His motives might seem kinda iffy since he does start out as an obsessive fanboy and becomes determined to kill Spiderman, but if you look at it carefully it's apparent that he's...well, not quite all there from the beginning. And for all the shit his effects will surely get, I thought they fit. Everything has a place (yes, even dubstep).
Dane DeHaan, who plays Harry, hams it up just as much, if not more in his stint as Green Goblin. His ham levels reach critical! However his motives are someone understandable and I honestly think make more sense than they did in the Raimi movies.
I talked about the character development before, and well, yeah, there's a lot of it. Maybe too much. That is, there are a total of 4 action scenes in the movie (though one barely counts). And this is a long movie, bordering on 2 hours and 30 minutes. The issue that on one hand it's being really dramatic while on the other being really over the top and somewhat campy. It might be a bit...discombobulating. Maybe you can't classify the movie as either a drama or popcorn film, I dunno. It's something you can either roll with or not.
Now you might be wondering why I didn't mention Giamatti as Rhino or all the plot threads, which there are quite a few of. Indeed, it might give bad flashbacks of Spiderman 3, which it sorta did. That tends to happen when you have more than 2 villains. Well, one major difference, and this will have spoilers, is that no, not all of these threads are tied up in the movie. Because they are transitioning into a third movie. Rhino shows up at the VERY end and the scene from the trailers with Spidey jumping into him swinging the sewer lid IS the ending. Same with Harry, who only appears as Goblin in the last 15 minutes or so. It's not like Venom in Spiderman 3 who shows up late and dies, no, Goblin and likely Rhino will probably be back in a third movie, potentially along with the rest of the Sinister Six, who are outright referred to being organized.
Overall, I largely enjoyed it. It was at least better than the first and I'd recommend giving it a chance. Anyway, that's just my two cents. Anyone else seen it? What'd you think? Stuff.
