Hi Guys, Iam in serious need of help from a mod, chatter,or anyone. I have received the info of the TMF's new home on Yahoo, and even found the chat. My problem is that the chat on there will not load because it says I need to download Virtual Manager to get in. I have tried to locate this application, but cant, because I do not understand what Iam doing. Without it, Iam in serious trouble as Myriads has informed me that this chat is good and broken, and while they are still working on it, may never be fixed. You guys may have found a new and wonderful home on Yahoo, but I will never join you unless I resolve this. If Myriads, Mimis, Ft,Pawzie or anyone else reads this, and can help in any way, please Email me at MRC 012370 at AOL.com ASAP so I can resolve this. Without it, I cannot be a part of the new TMF, and from what I'm hearing from Myriads and others, apparently the old TMF will be good and gone unless a miracle happens, so I really need help from someone about how to resolve this. Thanks.

the tmf is going down? WHEN HOW??did i miss something😡

f/f, the old tmf chat is "Good and Broken" to quote Myriads. He says they are trying to work on it, but he didnt sound too promising about it ever getting jump started again. There is a new TMF chat that all seem to have started at Yahoo Groups tickling. Apparently the TMF has had a little used spot over there for years that they are now going to as a backup while this one is down, and perhaps permanently if this one cant get going. My problem is that I cannot load the chat over there due to the fact that I cannot figure out how to load Microsoft Virtual Manager, which is needed to access said chat. That's why I was asking for help. Anyway, Good Luck with finding the TMF's new home and enjoying it. I hope to see you there sometime if I can get assistance with figuring this out, because I have a feeling that this chat room is as defunct as the Brooklyn Dodgers! HA! (Who of course are now the LA Dodgers)

Mitchell, I just went to the Microsoft site, ran a search and came up with the following...

Microsoft Moves Forward with Removal of Java from Products
On February 3, 2003, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay pending appeal of a preliminary injunction order entered by the District Court in Baltimore that required Microsoft to distribute Sun's Java runtime environment (JRE) with the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system and to halt "separate" distribution of the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM). The Court of Appeals decision came as Microsoft was taking the first of many steps to comply with the preliminary junction order.

I'm curently looking for other updates from Sun Technologies themself. I thought I had the latest as well. But, it doesn't work in yahoo. I'll let you know what I find. Just figured I'd post this now so you know someone's on it.

Ann

Ann, thanks for the post. The bottom line for me is that from what you say, unless a miracle happens, and they get this old chat running again somehow, Iam finished as a TMF chatter unless you can locate another option for both of us. This is very bad news for me. Iam very tied into the TMF. You guys are like my second family, and I will miss you all terribly if this chat no longer exists. I do know that someone said Marauder is on it, and I wish him all the best with getting the chat running again. According to Myriads, this old chat is gone, and the new one at Yahoo is now the TMF chat. I hope Marauder can come up with a miracle, because barring that, I will no longer be able to be a TMF chatter anymore, a terrible blow for me. Good Luck with locating something, I hope to hear from you soon. If you want to contact me personally and not thru post, my email is MRC 012370 at AOL.com.

No special software required for Yahoo chat

Hey Mitch,

This is MikeS from the TMF. My email is [email protected] if you want to give me a holler. I don't understand your email address or I'd email you. It's [email protected] but it sure isn't what you posted. No embedded spaces. But if you email me first, I can figure it out.

First of all, there is NO special software you need to participate in a chat room for a Yahoo group. Anyone telling you that is simply trying to muddy the water. Millions of people are on Yahoo every day and it's one of the most reliable portals on the net. It MAY be your AOL browser that is causing the problems, but as much as I hate AOL (and you know that!), I'm really not sure of that. Bring up Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) and go to...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TMForum/

then select Chat on the left. Yeah, it seems to take forever to bring up Yahoo chat, but it will eventually work. Certainly the TMF chat is faster, simpler and easier, but Yahoo chat WILL work. Actually Yahoo chat is considerably more powerful with voice chat, more icons, and fancier fonts, and all that stuff makes it slower.

All that being said, I know that Yahoo has neglected the Mac users, especially on voice chat. You can't do voice chat with a Mac. Sorry 'bout that. But text chat works, even with a Mac.

Oh yeah, you DO need a Yahoo ID to do chat. No problem. Just get one. It's free. Pretend you're a teenager and simply do what it says. It's really easy. Don't make it hard. It isn't.

Be sure you have decently current software such as Windows 98 or higher (Windows98SE, ME, 2000 or XP) and MSIE at least 5.5. (I think you do.) Surely you don't have Windows 95! After all we've talked... Nah...

You might try downloading MSIE again to make sure you get all the software you need. It's all in the browser. My MSIE is version 6.0. Go to...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

to get the latest MSIE. Yeah, it takes forever (over an hour) over a dialup line, but that's even more reason to go to broadband. You can probably pick up a CD with MSIE on it from any computer store in your area. CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Ask a techie in the store. That may be faster than downloading it.

I'm gonna be out of pocket starting Tuesday for about two weeks, but keep the faith. You don't need any "special" software to use Yahoo.

"I feel your pain" buddy! Keep on tryin'! You'll get there! We miss you!

Mike

Thank you to both Pawz and Mike for those suggestions. I appreciate the support. I will try both, and see if any work. Yes, Mike, I do have a Yahoo ID. Let me go try, and I hope to be there later. Gosh I wish the regular chat was back already. Oh, and if I dont see you Mike, have a good trip, and thanks again for the suggestions.

Java Virtual Machine

The problem seems to lie in the version of JVM on your computer. I have the most recent JVM and cannot use the yahoo chatroom, however, Rio has an older version on her machine and it works just fine. When Sun updates the JVM, classes are changed, and some are deprecated. If an applet uses a class that has been deprecated in the newer VM's, that applet will no longer function properly unless the applet is recoded. The chances of Yahoo recoding their chat applet is slim. The current version of the JVM is 1.41 I think. You can try installing version 1.3x or even 1.2x and see if that works for you.

While I do love the Java language, I do think the way the JVM's backwards compatibility is a hit or miss is a real pain in the rear sometimes. I've run into this problem several times in other projects. This does seem to be the most likekly cause of the problem with Yahoo.

Mike, Nobody is trying to play games here. There are a number of people unable to get into the chat rooms at yahoo without DLing a new java program. I'm not sure why. But, it IS a reality, not a joke.

Ann

The links I posted (2 help links) got mitch and a number of other people into the room. I recommend trying them, they may work for you.

Pawz

Pawz is right. They absolutely made the difference with me getting in. Without her help, and those links, I never would have gotten in, and I owe much thanks to her for finding them for me. I do agree with what Pawz said , Ann, and I recommend that you try them as well, as they may well work for you the way they did for me. Good Luck, and I hope it gets you into the chat.

Mitch

I'm in the middle of a project and haven't had time to check and see if it works for me. But, don't worry. I will. 😉

Ann

Whatever works!

Ann, Pawz, et al,

It's hard to argue with success! 🙂 Mitch followed those links that Pawz gave him and did what they told him - and lo and behold he got in! Yea! What can I say? Every time I think I've got this computer stuff all figured out, I learn something new! 🙂

Anyway, Mitch is back in operation and I hope this exchange of posts has been helpful to other people as well.

Sure will be glad when (and if) our TMF chat room is back in operation, but the backup Yahoo chat room ain't half bad!

Take care y'all and see ya in a couple of weeks!

Mike
