I just got rid of my McAffee because the free subscription ran out. I have a 1year paid subscription with Spyware Dr. However, one I installed it, it's been slowing my system down. Only with programs that have a lot of animated and moving objects does it do that though. I am typing this thread up on Notepad and it's moving at normal pace.

Is there some type of setting that I should turn off or something to make it stop slowing this down?

Most security programs tend to be resource hogs some are worse then others. It could just be Spyware Dr on your system is very slow. I would check other peoples review of the product on Amazon or newegg and see if everyone complains about it slowing their system down. If its something due to Spyware Dr. then you have to decide if its something you can live with. If not I can reccomend a few other antispyware programs.

Also whats your current security setup now? If you dropped Mcafee then you should have a firewall and some sort of antivirus in addition to the antispyware program you have. If you have no firewall currently active the slowing down maybe be do to malware coming onto your computer.

There are several good free firewalls Comodo is one of them.

There are several good free antivirus like AVG and Avast.

I tried the free version of Spyware Dr.Hated it,computer ran slow,it fixed nothing of any importance.Thumbs down here.

As they said, some programs are better than others. You may want to investigate as to whether it is launching updates or system scans automatically but too frequently. I have had antivirus programs that started system scans so often that you would see slowdowns almost hourly. If you are looking for alternatives there are many to recommend but if you want to keep the current checking how often it updates/scans is a good start.

I just un-installed Spyware and now it's back to running normal. I'll just upload it when I need to do virus checks untill I can find a new spyware program.

Thanks all.

Crystal, I have Avast anti virus, and it is a good system. It automatically scans your computer when your computer goes into screen saver.

Also, after I had my computer problem earlier this year with the adware freezing it, Kurch told me to download a program called Superantispyware. It is a free program. Once a week, for about an hour, I run it, and it finds and deletes things like adware, spyware, or other trojans. It has worked well for me.

Hope that helps.

Mitch

Spyware programs only protect against spyware. Usually they afford little protection against viruses. Although today there is a bit of blurring between all these things and everything tends to just be called malware. It would be a good idea to have a Antivirus, Firewall, and Antispyware program running to be certain you are safe. There are freeware versions of these things so you can stay protected without having to spend anything.

Yes, I have used Avast for about a year now, and have no complaints.

On the subject of spyware, be wary of what you download, because some of the less-than-honest folks out there will infect your machine with spy-ware then you'll be getting pop-ups as to where you can purchase their own software to remove the spyware they planted, in the first place.
