Startrek "Scotty" James Doohan dead

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. (1330 GMT) at his Redmond, Washington, home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

"The producers asked me which one I preferred," Doohan recalled 30 years later. "I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, 'If this character is going to be an engineer, you'd better make him a Scotsman.' "

The series, which starred William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr. Spock, attracted an enthusiastic following of science fiction fans, especially among teenagers and children, but not enough ratings power. NBC canceled it after three seasons.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow."

"I took his advice," said Doohan, "and since then everything's been just lovely."

Jimmy's health has been failing for some time now..... I had the pleasure of meeting him on 3 different occasions in my Star Trek convention days.

He was some character in person. My favorite story of his was when he told of trying to decide what accent to use for "Scotty".

He did 8 different types of accent for us and had us in stitches.

He was a very personable man and I shall miss him.......

Kirk/Scott yes; Shatner/Doohan NO

I read today (from a 1998 interview) that Mr. Doohan did not care for William Shatner. To paraphrase, Doohan said he "liked Captain Kirk, but sure didn't like Bill. He was so insecure he only thought of himself."

Interesting the things that happen behind life's curtain.

Man, I heard this on the radio on the way to work, today. What a sad day indeed. James Doohan was awesome. The words "Beam me up, Scotty," became a well-known household phrase.

My favorite Scotty scenes? Well, the one classic scene would be in "The Trouble With Tribbles" where he gets in a fight with the Klingons and later has to explain to Kirk why he threw the first punch.

Another one is an episode called "The Lights of Zetar" in which Scotty falls in love with the beautiful Lieutenant Mira Romaine..."Captain!!! The phasers!! THEY'RE KILLING MIRA!!!!"

In the fourth Star Trek movie, there is a funny little scene in which Scotty approaches a 1980s desktop computer which he is surprised to find is not equipped with voice recognition. Then he sees the keyboard and begins typing at an impressive 120 words-per-minute, which you have to admit is pretty good for a guy who probably had never even seen a computer keyboard in his lifetime.

Finally, in a classic episode of Star Trek - The Next Generation entitled "Relics," Scotty is rescued by Riker and company from a small vessel crashed on the exterior of a Dyson Sphere, where he spent 80 years in a transporter loop. His reaction to the "future" Enterprise and interaction with its crew were most enjoyable.

At least James is now free from the chains and haze of Alzheimer's disease. He was one of our greatest character actors.

My favorite "Scotty" moment came at the end of "The Trouble With Tribbles", when Kirk demanded to know what happened to the tribbles.....Scotty's answer:

"I gave them to the Klingon's sir, where there they'll be no "tribble" at all".

I never realised he was 85.
That shows how fast time really passes...

A friend of mine used to turn around the famous quote whenever he ordered another whisky at the bar: "Scotch me up, Beamy!"

Rest In Peace, Mr. Doohan.
You were magnificent in that role, and will be remembered by many.

Thanks Scotty for making me love space as a kid and making me still love space and adventure as an adult.

It's like I lost a family member...

We'll put more power to the shields for you James, rest in peace my friend...

Computer? Hellllooo Computer...

I just adored Scotty. Also, can't forget - "Captain, there be whales here!"
RIP, Mr. Doohan. Thanks for the entertainment.

"I can't change the laws of physics, Captain"....... :cry1:

i'm tearing up just thinkin' about it. He was one of my fave charactors from the orriginal series. His ashes are going to be sent into space, which is what he requested that happen after he died

...i'm giving you all the power i got captain...

My favorite Scotty moment was the time a drunken Scotty was about to enter the hologram to replicate the Enterprise and said "USS Enterprise.. no bloody A.. B.. C.. or D". I thought that was hysterical.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Doohan's passing. There were times when he made Star Trek.

My favorite Scotty moment (or film, actually) was Star Trek IV, when they went back in time and he's trying to fiddle around with 1980's technology. That was classic.

Rest in Peace, Chief.

I like the episode where Scotty got into a drinking contest with an alien and kept going til the alien passed out. Then Scotty starts congratulating the whiskey bottle:

"We did it, you and me!!"

Gene Roddenberry's were also shot up into space. I think that's neat.

I like the episode where Scotty got into a drinking contest with an alien and kept going til the alien passed out. Then Scotty starts congratulating the whiskey bottle:

I also am reminded of the episode where they are stuck in the Malkovian version of the old west...The late Dr. McCoy was concocting a sleep grenade and Scotty volunteered to test it. But first he had to have a snort: "It's ta kill the pain," he explains and tosses it back. McCoy says, "But this is painless!" To which Scotty replies "Upp! Ya shoulda warned me sooner!"

I mourn him, but I'm happy for the way he helped shape my childhood.

I am very sad to hear that Scotty has passed away. As a huge Star Trek fan, I am really saddened by Scotty's passing. I own the whole Star Trek original series and watch them all the time. To you Scotty, I will have a shot of scotch in your honor. You will be missed.
