S&M

S&M is short for sado-masochism, or sadism and masochism-
the act of bondage, discipline, slave training, etc. for the purpose of sexual gratification.
Sadism is named after the Marquis de Sade, an old world author whose romance/erotica/horror novels were the first popular source of such "sadistic" activities; I have no clue where the word masochism comes from tho...

In its truest sense, Sadism is causing pain on an individual for sexual gratification, while Masochism is the craving of pain for same gratification. The term has come to cover a much broader set of actions over the years, including bondage and the like. Usually the more intense and "equipment-heavy" scenes are referred to as S&M, while much other play falls under the heading of B&D (bondage and discipline), which is more based in psychological control as opposed to pain for the sake of pain.

Funny thing, many think a Sadist and a Masochist would make a great pair, but a true Sadist would really have no interest in working over someone who was enjoying it. 😎

Well

Sorry, but pain and sex just do not go together for me...lol 😎 Whatever floats your boat!

Masochist: "Hit me! Flog me! Whip me!" :whip:
Sadist (with an evil grin on his face): "No!!!":firedevil

BTW: Masochism got its name from Leopold Knight of Sacher-Masoch, an Austrian writer who dealt with sexual 'deviations' (1836-1895). 😎

And Sacher-Masoch's classic, "Venus in Furs," is still well worth reading (for F/m domination, not for tickling).

(Actually, I am referring to the English translation; the original is in German, and titled something like "Venus im Peltz.")

Scientists now think that tickling and pain are different manifestations of the same nerve impulse.

While that may be true in terms of which nerves tickling affects, I still think there's a BIG difference. Tickling can be painful, but it certainly doesn't have to be... 😉

Now see, I'm going to start again on this thread 😉... I've always wondered what the link was exactly between tickling and BDSM. I'm like Krokus... I DON'T like pain, I avoid pain as much as possible, I derive no pleasure from hurting other people. But we all agree that there is such a thing as a "sadistic" tickler, and a "masochistic" ticklee, and my tickle fantasies are all based in this. I wouldn't tickle torture someone who doesn't enjoy it... and I wouldn't want to be tickled longer than I would enjoy it. Yet there is definitely a sadist/masochist aspect to it. It confuses me, because it's like there's a similarity between the two, but the idea of actual BDSM, whipping, humiliation etc. kinda freaks me out 😱 I don't understand actually wanting to torture someone, or to be tortured, like in a painful way.

I think a lot of people are into S&M for 3 reasons (my own theories)

1. The pure power trip & sense of power - or giving up of power- is attractive to some people at a sensual level as well as within their personality.

2. There is a roleplay and some "acting" involved, which can be fun and edifying. Like a Method actor, the real pain or torment ads that much more reality to the roleplay.

3. Like most people, and like many ticklers, S&M people are at the core, sensualists. They like to explore the sense of touch (and the other senses as well). However, there is something within them that makes them take that exploration further, with pain & discomfort being nothing more than further exploration of the sense of touch - and the exploration of trust that is taken to an extent not even found in many marriages! I think deep down, it's about touch and the senses, pain is just one more "angle". Add to the fact that, like with tickling, an intense session creates a natural opium-like high from the increased breathing & heart rate, the influx of adrenaline, the changing levels of seratonin in the brain and the release of your endorphins which (with tickling) have no place to go.... so you just become relaxed and laid back when it's all over. I explained this theory to a woman who was very dominant and into light to moderate pain (and tickling if it drove the person crazy) and she agreed that it was a pretty logical assesment, so who knows....

two answers for this thread

first; there is no such thing as a stupid question. in the military, on my first day at reseption, a capt. said there are no stupid questions. when i went through the chicago police accadamy we were told there are no stupid questions, that it ment the instructors were not doing their job properly! there you have my philosophy.
next, tickling, and pain; tickling is NOT part of the same path way as pain! that is an old, and incorrect idea, that some won't let go of. my proof is that we can take analgesics to block or deaden pain, but the person is still ticklish! tickle sensations run along the pleasure pathways. pain, and itching run along the same pathways. i believe this false assumption came about, due to so reseacher finding tickling to be annoying, so he decided it was associated with the pain portion of the central nervous system. what an asshole!

The tickling/pain pathway identity may be wrong, but it's not old science: most scientists who think about tickling at all still accept this notion as gospel. I'm not sure about the analgesic argument: after all, they can't deaden the response to say a prick or a knife unless they cause total numbness, which also prevents ticklishness.

BUT, I just remembered something that does raise real questions about a pain/ticklishness link. On an old PBS series about the brain, maybe 15 years ago, I remember there was a little girl who had no sense of pain -- she was in constant danger because she simply could not register damage to her body. BUT there was a casual scene of her playing with her family, and an older brother tickled her ribs -- and she was DEFINITELY ticklish!

Since the girl had NO pain receptors but was still ticklish, that really raises questions about a link between the two sensations.

I am probably the only person here who doesn't know what S&M stands for.

The Mars Candy Company is missing an excellent marketing opportunity to sell more candy...S & M's. I'm sure that even sadists and masochists would welcome a candy that melts in their mouth, not in their hands. (But then again, maybe the masochists would prefer it to melt in their hands.) The bigger question would be, which group prefers plain and which group prefers peanut? Okay...sorry for the interruption...I now return you to your sado-masochistic discussion...

Very funny! Which, for some reason, reminds me that sometimes the title of Vice President of Sales & Marketing is amusingly abbreviated as Vice President of S&M. 😎
