Suicide Rate Spikes Among People Ages 35-64..

I just read an article which states that.., supposedly, the suicide rate has dramatically risen among Americans ages 35 to 64. This article states that suicide rates among people younger than 35, and older than 65, have remained about the same. They say there is no specific reason for the rise, but cited the struggling economy in recent years as a possible factor.

Personally, while I at times have been very depressed over the past fourteen months since my mom found out about her fatal illness, passed away, and since she passed, I haven't felt like I want to die. I'm still comparatively young, and my mom always used to say "Where there's life there's hope".

Reading this article takes me back to the morning my mom died. Right after she was pronounced dead, I was crying for a while, and said something like "Take me too, I want to die". To which the idiot doctors and nurses asked me "Do we need to call someone?" Its like.. er.. no. I just lost my mother whom I loved dearly, and now have to call my father to tell him the best news of his life.. I'm heartbroken, and just talking.. shut up and let me vent".

I personally think the still struggling economy and the fact that most of the workforce is 35 to 64, might have something to do with the rise in suicides.

Thoughts on this?

I think you're probably right. We live in a world where you need a job in order to care for yourself and your family, yet we also live in a world where technology is making many jobs obsolete. You can do absolutely everything you're supposed to do, and yet still get replaced by a machine. That's bound to be depressing, especially since we get people like Maniac coming along and telling these people it's all their fault for ruining their lives by not being smarter or faster or more conservative or whatever.

People are bound to feel helpless and attacked and rejected and that's a recipe for suicide if I ever saw one.

9's, I agree with you.

maniac is still my friend. I know he hates "liberalism". He has a right to his opinion, just as we all do.

dunno... might coincide with being the most overly medicated Americans in history... just turn on the tube and listen to most drug commercials disclaimers... reads like a nightmare list

too many people being told over and over again they can just pop a pill to deal

This. I guess we are in A Brave New World.

I agree with C.A.B., but also want to add on another variable...

At some point - after childhood, adolescence, and well into adulthood; if your life sucked for 65% or more during your whole life, nobody should really blame you for checking out early. However, if somebody is not sure, they should seek help from loved ones and professionals. Basically, if suicide is a direct thought, it will be followed by a direct action. If it is a indirect thought("thinking about"), then there is a window for that person to make a positive change in their life.

And just coincidentally, certain of those antidepressant drugs they're so casually plugging on TV (SSRI's) can seriously impact sexual functioning. Just sayin'.

They gotst a lil' poikle pill for that too as I understand it. 😉 Ah, better living through modern pharmaceuticals *please read our disclaimers

C.A,.B. , Do I count as an "Overly medicated American"? I take Xanax every night to sleep. I have an anti depressant, but I don't want to take it, as I would rather work my own problems out myself, or with therapy, as opposed to being on meds to deal with my emotions.

Yup.

I have an anti depressant, but I don't want to take it, as I would rather work my own problems out myself, or with therapy, as opposed to being on meds to deal with my emotions.
Wise. Its worth a shot. People often surprise themselves with their own resiliency when they grab control of their own lives with both hands. And that makes any victory twice as sweet.

Yes! People who think depression is chemically driven, and pharmaceutical drugs are the cure - is a ass! Depression can be chemically driven(but, not always...), but a simple cure can be change: environment, the people who you associate with, the places you go to, etc...

I don't know, but I was advised by the Dr not to just stop taking it. He might have to wean me off of it.

As I've posted before, I';ve had trouble sleeping for 3 yrs, since my mom found out about the cancer. The Dr gave me this to help. My dad's wife takes Xanax too. I've talked to the Dr about getting off the Xanax. Perhaps when things calm down in my life.

That sounds like a fascinating article, Mitchell. Could you please post a link to it? I'd like to check it out.

Thanks.

Its on many sources and sites, DAJT. Go to Fox news.com, type in suicide rate spikes among middle aged Americans, and its there. Was posted May 2.

Don't really see what so hard about posting that, but whatevs.

Mitchell, I think you brought up this topic because you're a prime candidate for potential suicide.

Please seek help immediately.

You posted over and over that you would "NOT BRING UP PERSONAL ISSUES" here on the TMF, yet you create post like this *as a reason* to discuss personal issues like the death of your mother, your reaction ... your father ... your friend .... etc etc etc.
There is really no difference. Think about it, and why you're doing it and your mental well-being.

That Doctor and Nurse had Every Right to question your mental stability!
If it were me, I would have had you committed right then and there. No questions asked!!!
I am surprised they didn't as a CYA Medical Insurance move.
They would be doing their job to protect you from yourself.

Please get the help you so desperately need!!!
